[edit] History

MGS was founded in Singapore on 26 July 1887, by Sophia Blackmore. She was an Australian missionary sent by the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church of America. The school started out on Short street, By 1925 the school was overcrowded, which precipitated a move to Mount Sophia and remained there until 1992.

MGS (Secondary) became an independent school in January 1989. In 1992, MGS moved to her new site at 11 Blackmore Drive. The road is named after the school's founder made at the request of the school.

Methodist Girls' School is a well known institution in the region with a history of academic and sporting excellence. The school routinely placed in the top 10 schools of Singapore in the rankings by the Ministry of Education before the rankings were disabled. In the current ranking system the school regularly places in the Band 1 category, the highest possible achieved category.

The school has also consistently produced national top scorers in key examinations, in both the Primary and Secondary school divisions.

MGS currently does not offer the Integrated Programme as an option and her Secondary 4 students sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' level examinations in November. However, students who are qualified enough can try for the IB programme at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) after Secondary 4.

MGS also offers the Music Elective Program (MEP).

The MGS uniform has not altered much throughout its history since it was first introduced in 1922. It consists of a pinafore in which the upper section is white, and the lower section a pleated navy blue skirt; and a white blouse with a sailor collar goes over the pinafore. A badge bearing the school crest is fastened between the lapels of the blouse. Prefects wear a tie in lieu of the badge as well as a name tag.
