Metamorphoses (play)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Metamorphoses is a play based on the Greek poem Metamorphoses by Ovid. The adaptation, written by Mary Zimmerman, is a series of theatrical vignettes based on scenes from the poem. As part of the adaptation, some of the vignettes were given contemporary characteristics.
The list of myths represented in the play are as follows:
Creation
King Midas
Alcyone and Ceyx
Erysichthon
Orpheus and Eurydice
Pomona and Vertumnus
Myrrha
Phaeton
Eros and Psyche
Baucis and Philemon
Metamorphoses began at Northwestern University as "Six Myths." It later moved to Lookingglass Theatre Company before moving to Broadway. The play opened at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre in March 2002. Metamorphoses won a Tony Award for Best Director in 2002, and has since been staged at theatres around the country.
One of the biggest memorabilia of this play is that the stage, which is supposed to be a 3/4 thrust, is engulfed in an entire 3-foot pool of water. Also, though the play contains about 75 characters, only about 10 actors are casted, each playing multiple roles.
