[edit] Background

In May 1945, with the surrender of Germany, after over 35,000 Bf 109’s had been assembled by Messerschmitt, the majority of the Bf 109 production lines were closed down. Even with the conclusion of World War II in Europe, in both Spain and Czechoslovakia, the Bf 109 production continued.

In 1942 Spain signed licensing agreements with Messerschmitt to produce the Bf 109 G-2 and had received tooling and jigs in preparation of starting production. Hispano Aviacion also received 25 uncompleted fuselage and wing assemblies as part of the start-up agreement. Due to the priorities necessary by the Luftwaffe, Messerschmitt was unable to complete their contract obligations and to finalize overseeing the initial start-up of the factory. In addition, Hispano Aviacion was also unable to acquire the DB605A engines due to wartime shortages. By 1947 the factory was starting to produce completed airframes, this lead the factory officials to search for a replacement engine comparable to the DB605A, this resulted in the Hispano-Suiza 12Z-17 being selected; these aircraft were designated HA-1109-K1L (65 being produced). In 1954 Hispano Aviacion re-engineered the airframe to accept the Rolls-Royce Merlin 500-45 which was produced as the HA-112-M1L. Spain continued using the HA-1112 operationally until late 1967

Czechoslovakia, in 1946 restarted the closed Messerschmitt production line at the Avia Company (a division of the Skoda Works) in Prague using original jigs and tooling along with a foundation substantial number of uncompleted airframes. From 1946 to 1949 about 550 airframes were completed as Avia S-99, resemling a Bf 109 G-14, and Avia S-199 (Jumo engine, otherwise unchanged). Due to a fire in a warehouse a substantial number of DB605 engines were lost and a search for a replacement engine was started. Again, a substitute engine was sought, and the Junkers Jumo 211 (which had powered the He-111) was found in substantial quantity. Unlike either the original DB605 or the Roll-Royce Merlin, the torque of this substitute engine was extremely high resulting in a high fatality rate from these aircraft. The Czechoslovak National Security Guard retired the last of the S-199's In 1957.

Post war, in addition to the Spanish and Czechoslovakian Air Forces, both Finland and Switzerland continued to use the Bf 109 operationally until the late 1950’s. The then new nation of Israel purchased 25 Avia S-199 (23 delivered) when due to being embargoed, they were unable to acquire aircraft from other sources. The Israel Air Force retired their aircraft in early 1949.

From 1945 to 1948, the majority of the grounded aircraft of Germany and the axis powers that had received the Bf 109’s were quickly destroyed/scrapped. Some examples were taken as either captured aircraft/war trophies/technical examples for further studies. For the next 23 years, these were the first generation of Bf 109 survivors.

In 1967 with the planned filming of the movie The Battle of Britain the producer wanted an accurate large screen presence. Fortunately, the Spanish Air Force was starting to retire their HA-1112’s and an agreement was reached to use these aircraft. The Confederate Air Force had also just purchased numerous examples of the HA-1112. These aircraft were also leased for the production of this movie. For the next 35 years, these Spanish Bf 109s were the mainstay for numerous WWII aviation movies and television work, including Hanover Street, Memphis Belle, The Tuskegee Airmen and Piece of Cake just to name a few.

Starting in late 1988, numerous accounts of crashed examples of WWII aircraft still extent in Russia were being recovered and being restored. Other examples of the early models of the Bf 109 have been found in crash sites in France and Italy (as well as several aircraft recovered where they had been buried in Germany). These aircraft with known combat histories are the foundation of the current wave of recovered/restored Bf 109’s with further discoveries anticipated.
