Mesa del Sol

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mesa del Sol is a master-planned, 12,900-acre, mixed-use, New Urbanist community currently under development in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The master developer is Forest City Covington, a joint venture between Forest City Enterprises and Covington Capital.

The Mesa del Sol development will benefit from New Mexico's 2006 Tax Increment for Development legislation. The passage of this legislation was lobbied by Forest City Covington LLC, which had also contributed to the campaigns of gubernatorial and State Land commissioner candidates in 2006. After the tax increment financing law was passed, the Albuquerque City Council approved the creation of a tax increment development district for the Mesa del Sol area to aid in the creation of infrastructure for the development. [1] The development and the use of tax increment financing has been viewed negatively by some Albuquerque advocacy groups.

Urban planner Peter Calthorpe worked on the design of the project. [1]

It is currently home to Advent Solar, a manufacturer of solar panels [2], and Albuquerque Studios, a 168,000-square-foot, $74-million motion picture and television production facility. [3]
