Mes amis, écoutez l'histoire, also known as The Test of Tenors, is an aria featured in the opera Le postillon de Lonjumeau, an opera written by Adolphe Adam and one of his most recognized works, in the genre of the ballet "Giselle" and the Christmas song "Cantique de Noël". The aria holds the record for including the highest note written for a tenor.
The aria is known as "The Test of Tenors" due to the demanding high D in the end of the aria, which is perhaps the reason why this aria is rarely performed. Famous performers of this aria are: Nicolai Gedda (Gustav Ustinov) and Jewish tenor Joseph Schmidt, performing the German version, "Freunde vernehmet die geschichte".
