User personal information

Hi MER-C I noticed on ANI you removed personal information from User:Ouijalover. There's still a direct link to his personal website which identifies him (http://www.freewebs.com/tyluthan). Re: Question on COI board...

Hello MER-C, I don't mean to sound like a nitpicker but I was really hoping you'd find time to answer my question regarding duplicate entries of Barbara Schwarz. As a refresher, the editor I was bringing to the boards attention had already set up what I perceived to be an incorrectly formatted entry. For several reasons, I set up another entry in the format as noted in the instructions and sent a message to that editor indicating he should consider reposting under my entry and closing out his. I asked you if there was a better way for me to have handled this situation. I doubt it'll come up again, but if it does I'd like to do things as correctly as possible. Thanks for your time, Anynobody 05:15, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

It's just that I like to keep discussion in one spot, rather than in two discrete bunches. MER-C 05:26, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I understand, it's easier to keep track of that way. Should I have posted my concerns under the already created section? (I can see where organization could trump a correct setup). Anynobody 06:04, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, and you could have fixed the section heading anyway while you do so. That's what I have done. MER-C 06:24, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I was a bit concerned that since he was the person I was reporting, he might find it offensive if I changed his post. not to mention the perception others might get of me, "See you can't even do this right... I'll do it for you and oh yeah here's why you have a COI." Don't get me wrong, I'd find a polite way to do that if that's what I should do. I'm just wondering which concerns are more important, and that if he had been offended it wouldn't look intentional on my part. I know this situation has to be a pain in your arse, and I appreciate your effort to help me understand. Anynobody 06:47, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't think he would care. But that's just my opinion. MER-C 07:07, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I guess I meant, should I care in that case? (whether he gets offended or not). Anynobody 07:33, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I'd try it and see what happens. If he does care, then you should. If he doesn't, well nobody does. MER-C 07:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your help, MER-C that answers all my questions. (I'm done posting here, so if you prefer to keep your talk page tidy you can do what you want with this section.) Anynobody 08:09, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup and deletion

Since you apparently arn't looking at an AFD you started where I asked this, I'll ask again here: Why do you never mark things for cleanup and always leap directly to the prod or afd option? Jtrainor 12:26, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

a) I'm a deletionist. Probably a member of the cabal itself.
b) The size of the cleanup backlogs is overwhelming. Things don't cleaned up for a year(s), and that's about par for the course. Note that the merge count is misleading, it is really 37 + 94 + 127 + 127 + 311 + 471 + 974 + 1994 + 1797 + 2146 + 1720 + 91 + 120 = 10009. (Plus merging isn't really an option with the amount of problematic Gundam stuff around). It is not acceptable that substandard "articles" on obscure subjects are floating around for so long without complying with basic Wikipedia policies. Jimbo once said that having no article is better than having an unsourced article (see [1]).
c) Did you actually check my contributions? I do place cleanup tags, but I need to be convinced about the suitability of the article beforehand. That excludes unsourced cruft on non-notable and minor anime characters, which contain no real world context or in the worst circumstances no assertion of notability with respect to the anime itself.
d) Deletion solves all problems. No article, no problem. MER-C 08:03, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

David Westerfield

Hi I noticed your reply in the conflict of interest board, regarding the IP address Special:Contributions/196.15.168.40. You stated the address might be in South Africa. I do not know the accuracy of the site you went to, but I find it hard to believe he's in South Africa. Because I put the IP in here and the search indicates the IP comes from Los Angeles. That makes more sense as the case originates in San Diego and the trial was televised nationally. The coverage did not extend to South Africa. Granted, maybe, somebody with a satellite could have watched it but I think the chance is very slim. 196.15.168.40 knows the case far too well to be just a casual observer of the case. Fighting for Justice 15:12, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

The location of the IP itself is in South Africa (I tracerouted it to a South African website), but I had a look at the RBLs and it is likely to be an open proxy. MER-C 06:01, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

WP:ACC

Hi, when someone requests an account at WP:ACC and the username has already been taken, you can e-mail the requester and remove their request from the page, rather than adding a note saying that the username has already been taken. This is done mainly to hide people's e-mail addresses from spammers and because once it's clear that a request can't be implemented, there's no point leaving it on the page. Tra (Talk) 17:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I thought it would be a good idea to leave them up there for a day or two so the people on the other end get a reason why it was disallowed. In the case of malformed requests, they don't have an email address and/or user name and can be removed immediately. MER-C 02:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
For when a username is taken or not supplied, as long as the e-mail address is given, the requester should be able to find out why their request is denied by reading their e-mail. If no e-mail address is supplied, however, it's always possible to respond on the requester's IP talk page, although this might be a bit harder at the moment with over 100 requests outstanding. Tra (Talk) 02:46, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

reverting "Americas"

Please accept my apology. I added the one line as an inside joke for a friend and was actually coming back to delete it. I did not realize you considered it vandalism. again, sorry for the trouble.

BJAODN, or what should be put in?

Hi there. Looking at the AFD on Most evil town in America that you deleted, i couldn't help but to think it could be in BJAODN. However, I am wondering: What could be put in BJAODN, and what kind of edit should we done so that it is to show why it belongs instead of a repository for bad article? George Leung 22:18, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

I suggest you read what I wrote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Most evil town in America and my talk page header again. As for BJAODN, I wouldn't add anything now as it, too, may be deleted. The only criteria for inclusion in BJAODN is that it is funny and stuff usually doesn't get removed from BJAODN. MER-C 11:24, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Wapiennik

Hi MER-C,

You recently nominated the article Wapiennik for speedy deletion citing criterium G6. That was a disambiguation page that unfortunately didn't have any links. Stupidly, I actually deleted the article without checking what this uncontroversial reason to delete might be, yet while reviewing the deletion I didn't find one. Why did you tag this article?

Happy editing, --Carabinieri 19:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to jump in on this one, but part of WP:CSD#G6 is "removing a disambiguation page that only points to a single article" - the disambig only pointed to Silesian Voivodship thus making a disambiguation page redundant and subject to uncontroversial speedy deletion as "housekeeping". Bubba hotep 07:27, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, looking back further at the deleted history (which MER-C can't do, unfortunately, yet), it appears Piotrus overwrote the original version of the page (about a Polish surname) because they felt it was not notable. Bubba hotep 07:32, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates on the subject I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. I'm using Google to look for suspicious userpages, and I found User:Josephseagullstalin. There's a lot of stuff there; for example, I can't tell whether the gallery at the bottom is fair use or not. He has made substantive edits to WP. Could you please take a look? Thanks. YechielMan 04:08, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

The gallery is not fair use, in fact the majority of are featured pictures here and/or at Commons. Because of prior encyclopedic contributions, a note on the editor's talk page is in order. Then prod in a month's time if still non-compliant.
P.S. there's a centralised list of search terms for finding dodgy userpages at Template:Spamsearch. MER-C 04:52, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

That was fast! But I'd already tagged it and it was removed by a probable WP:SPA or Sock (their two only edits were to remove the tag, a bit of spam, and justify it on the talk page) --Steve (Stephen) talk 09:41, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

If they remove the tag, just put it back. It only counts if an admin or an established contributor removes it. In fact, we have a warning for such deeds: {{subst:drmspeedy}}. MER-C 09:50, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
But we have to assume good faith that a second editor declined the speedy. Anyway, let's see what happens. Thanks --Steve (Stephen) talk 09:53, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
What I meant was that the speedy tag should not be replaced when an established editor has removed it. If the creator or a SPA does, then it's extremely hard to AGF and I'd just revert. MER-C 10:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

SimCity 5 article speedy deletion nomination

I have notified the creator of the article SimCity 5, that the article has been nominated for speedy deletion. Thank you for doing the nomination, I would have if you didn't. Camaron1 | Chris 13:35, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

I agree, it has been deleted three times through AfD alone (if you include the version with the title SimCity 5 (working title)). Camaron1 | Chris 13:48, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
Added that to the notice at the top of the "article". MER-C 13:50, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Please be more careful.

I grouped common thoughts together in paragraphs & divided a couple of long sentences to improve readability. Please actually read what is submitted before you revert & tell me that I deleted something. Check down a paragraph & you would see what you thought was deleted. Undoing legitimate entries is simply another form of vandalism. Gregogil 06:09, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

That doesn't mean getting rid of 75% of the article. MER-C 06:11, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

I apologize. Somehow it did delete the section after the one I was editing. I didn't think I even scrolled down to that section while editing. It's not like I haven't made edits before. I don't know how it happened.

I just had a page reverted a couple of weeks ago by someone who was trying to correct some vandalism, went back too far & deleted legit stuff that another had added as well as an edit I did. I jumped to the conclusion that you were being careless like that other person.

I'm sorry. Gregogil 06:33, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not myspace and/or a free web host. The guidelines on user pages says that "Wikipedia provides user pages to facilitate communication among participants in its project to build an encyclopedia." That implies that in order to have one, you should have encyclopedic contributions - all of the user pages concerned in Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:GRIMHAMM3R, Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Kwhite8 and Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Grandnoble are on their way to deletion because the users involved fail to meet this criteria.

Removing warnings in good faith is always allowable. MER-C 05:21, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the revert

KFP's RfA thanks

Thank you for supporting me on my recent nomination for adminship, which passed with a tally of 45/0/0. Please let me know if I can help with something or if I make a mistake. Cheers! --KFP (talk | contribs) 14:48, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Can we add Area 10 Project Space Peckham to your existing AfD for Dimitri launder?

I've seen multiple articles show up on one AfD, but am not sure how it's done. Can we just add Area 10 to the one you already opened? If that doesn't seem legal, I can open a new one. Let me know. EdJohnston 18:34, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

It's probably too late. I regularly add stuff to noms, but I restrain myself if the nom was more than a half-day old. At that point, I was uncertain about what to do with those articles. MER-C 04:46, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Locum tenens Deletion

Sorry if I just missed something, but I never noticed that Locum tenens was marked for deletion. I tagged hangon before the talk page was deleted, because I wanted to make sure a valid redirect or page on wiktionary was in place before it was completely gone. Could you point me to any logs showing that Locum Tenens was marked for deletion, I'm not contesting it, just making sure it wasn't accidental, and think a valid redirect should be in place. Did I flag Locum Tenens talk page for hangon correctly? Optigan13 04:05, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

The prod now expires on the 15th. I placed the {{transwiki}} tag. It's at Wiktionary at Transwiki:Locum tenens, which is kind of a limbo location. If it does get accepted, we can just place a {{wi}} on Locum tenens, regardless of whether the article was deleted on enwiki or not. MER-C 04:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I just didn't notice the tagging or the being put into wiktionary. Is there anything that needs to be done for the wiktionary aside from re-linking anything that links to what links here? Optigan13 04:51, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Not that I know of. MER-C 05:35, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

AIV

Hey Mer-c (what's the origin of your username?) I noticed another report to WP:AIV for an inproper username. It's not like I'm trying to tell you what to do or anything, in fact I admire how hard you work dealing with these things! :)

I was just wondering, when the username is in violation of guidelines because it is a commercial name, company name or so on, could you say so in your report? Sometimes there will be comments left by the admin because not all users know the company or commercial name and thus aren't 100% sure why it violates username policy. Cheers, and kudos again for your efforts! SGGH 12:47, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

I use a script for reporting usernames - it's one click so it saves me a few vital seconds. The problem with the particular one now on AIV, Durovina (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log), is too similar to current admin Durova (talk · contribs) (it's fairly obvious). The fact that the userpage doesn't look like one of a newbie adds to the suspicions.
As for my username, here's a bump in the right direction. MER-C 13:07, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
