[edit] Kentucky Derby, Inaugural meet
The Inaugural meeting (meet) of the Louisville Jockey Club was Monday to Saturday, 1875 May 17-22, with the first "Kentucky Derby" main event the second race on Monday. Beside the news Tuesday-Sunday (daily about 1/2 page in a 4-page paper) and review articles in the following week, important coverage in the Louisville Courier-Journal includes Tue-Wed May 11-12, both page 4; Sun May 05, p2 and p3; Mon May 06, p1. These articles show the significance of "The Derby" in England as a model, especially in its name, holiday status, and local economic bonanza.
