birth year was listed as 1964, the year she graduated from Sarah Lawrence. actually 1942, dont know if august date is correct. born nyc, not peru. not sure what prev. ed. was smokin. Multiple sources say that this woman was born in Lima, Peru, and she's in some categories of Peruvian people, so I put a request for citation that she was born in New York. --Descendall 05:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- Now, why is Monk in the LGBTProject? Seems unsourced or poorly sourced; and not really a central theme of her public work or public life. The current reference [1] is pretty slim. --Knulclunk 02:30, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
- You're right - it is pretty slim. The other two references I found were likewise not all that good - [2] and [3]. However, a quick search on Google of "meredith monk lesbian" shows that she's heavily involved in the LGBT community, performing for or with gay choruses, for LGBT centers, etc.
- I started looking for a ref because someone had put her in the Category:Lesbian musicians, and as you noted, it wasn't sourced. The TLA reference above states that she's a lesbian unequivocally - but I didn't find anything that wasn't a "4 sale" ref.
- If you strongly object, I'll remove the banner, but all evidence seems to point in the direction of her being a lesbian. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:23, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
- I was Meredith's student and transcriber from 1998-2000 during the production of Magic Frequencies. Meredith was partnered with a woman for nearly 20 years before her partner's death in 2002. However, she does not discuss her sexuality publicly and has also had long term relationships with men. I recommend respecting her discretion and excluding references to her personal sexuality/affiliations. Opusvox (talk) 06:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Meredith Monk was born in New York City. In the introduction to "Meredith Monk" (1997), edited by Deborah Jowitt, on page 3 Jowitt states that "Imagination and mischievousness goading each other on, Monk once wrote in a program biography that she was born in Peru, a fact that has become embedded in her history.
