[edit] History
MHMS was established in 2003 on the former campus of Knox Doss Middle School, next to Hendersonville Hospital. The school originally served grades 5-9 its first school year. The second school year, 04-05, the school served grades k-10 with the addition of a new elementary wing. The 05-06 school year served grades k-11. The 06-07 school year brought the first ever graduating class of MHMS. There were 57 college bound graduates in the class of 2007.
[edit] Paideia philosophy
MHMS prides itself as being a Paideia school. Paidiea is a teacher philosophy in which all classes engage in.
Paideia is not a strategy for teaching, but rather a philosophy of educating the whole child. Classrooms are student centered where children encounter fewer teacher-directed lessons and more discovery learning. A wide range of higher order conceptual skills are used to complement, not replace, the traditional basics of reading, writing, and computation. The education will include project learning, Socratic seminar instruction, and intellectual work from the students. The curriculum will focus on the study of literature, fine arts, music, foreign language, technology, science, math, and physical health.
[edit] Admittance
In order to be admitted into Merrol Hyde Magnet School, one must meet strict selection criteria. Once an application is submitted, the prospective student is administered a standardized test. In order to gain entry into the school, the student must score in at least the 85th percentile. There are waiting lists for most every grade in the school.
[edit] Dress code
Apart from other Sumner County Schools, Merrol Hyde Magnet School adheres to a strict dress code. Grades k-8 must wear garments from either Lands' End or French Toast. However, students in grades 9-12 adhere to a looser dress code. All students must wear solid polos and khaki slacks. Sweaters must be solid. No "hoodys" or denim is allowed. All outerwear must also meet the dress code.
[edit] Athletics
MHMS requires all students to participate in a sport, starting in the 7th grade. A wide variety of sports are offered at the school, including basketball, swimming, track, cross country, bowling, golf, and tennis. MHMS is also home to the world famous Merrol Hyde Walking Team.
