Merle Anthony Tuve (June 27, 1901 - May 20, 1982 [1]) was an American scientist who was a pioneer in the use of pulsed radio waves in the measurement of layers in the ionosphere, measurement of the proton-proton force at nuclear distances, led in the development of the proximity fuze at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and also made contributions to experimental seismology, radio astronomy, and optical astronomy.
