From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merit Students Encyclopedia was a printed encyclopedia that was very similar to Collier's Encyclopedia, but was geared towards upper grade school through college level. It was printed by Crowell-Collier Educational Corporation from about 1967-1992 (1967 was cited from the 1969 edition). There were twenty volumes, with two volumes of a dictionary in the set.

Like Collier's, Merit Students Encyclopedia (MSE) also would print an annual yearbook which would be the previous year in review called Merit Students Year Book. Along with the year in review, "special articles" would be in the front of the edition, and would focus on various of topics. In 1997, the last of the Merit Students Yearbook was printed. The next year, 1998 the yearbooks where Collier's Yearbooks, the yearbooks ceased publication in, with 2001 being the final year. Also, included with the yearbooks, would be "tabs" (stickers) that where to be inserted in the encyclopedia(s) that would refer to the yearbooks for "updated" information.

The encyclopedias are also arranged like a dictionary, with each volume being of a uniform size separated by words, instead of by the letter of the alphabet. There is also "Student Guides" which give a brief overview of certain topics. Also, "Highlights In History" (a printed timeline) and other graphs another "headings" make it easy to find information. There would also be at the end a listing of "Books for Further Study" on certain articles. The topics were written by various authors, which are cited at the end.
