[edit] The College
[edit] Academics
Upon admission, students commence a 2 year course leading to the Cambridge GCE "A" Level examinations, and can offer up to 4 "A" Level subjects, chosen either from the Arts Faculty or the Science Faculty. As in all junior colleges, students sit for the General Paper and Mother Tongue paper as mandatory "AO" level subjects, and undergo Project Work in JC1. In addition, students with added aptitude and deeper interests in their "A" level subjects can offer up to two "S" (special) papers, for a competitive advantage in bids for scholarships and further education.
From the 2006 intake and onwards however, students will be following the new A level curriculum [1].
Lessons are conducted in the lecture-tutorial style.
[edit] Facilities
Meridian Junior College operates in a campus which comprises a wide range of facilities, spanning from a fully-equipped gym to rehearsal rooms for various performing arts groups, complete with pianos and dance studios. A notable fixture is the College Library (Library@Meridian), an independent 2-storeyed block, run by the National Library Board, housing a growing collection of books. The college also boasts a fully air-conditioned hall, 5 lecture theatres equipped with audio-visual equipment, and a large sports block and track. Also available are photocopying services and a stationery shop.
In addition to its physical infrastructure, students have access to the school's "Integrated Virtual Learning Environment" (IVLE - www.mjc.wizlearn.com), which allows that to discuss assignments online as well as access to academic databases such as "The Economist" and "Science Resource Center". For other parts of the college life though, there is the MJC Leisure and Learning portal (http://mjc.sg) where students can sign up for Organised Student Activities, submit suggestions and gain endorsement for participation in projects, among other things. The college also has a student cafe, "PerKafe". it is run by the Business club and offers a variety of ice-cream (fat free), brownies,Pizza, soft drinks, mash potato and other snacks.
[edit] The Look
The college uniform is a light shade of blue, with a metallic silver collar pin bearing the school's logo. The girl's skirt has two pockets. The boys' uniform has two front and one back-pants pocket, and one shirt pocket.
The college blazer is unique as it is the only college formal attire which does not include the school uniform. It consists of a black blazer, grey cotton pants and a white long-sleeved shirt, or blouse in addition to black or court shoes.
[edit] CCA
Students may take part in a variety of co-curricular activities, divided into sports, the performing arts and club-based activities. Each CCA group is a tightly-bound unit.
MJC's niche CCA groups include the boys' soccer team, the sailing team and the Canoeing team on the sporting front, and the Symphonic Band, award-winning Choir and Dance society of the performing arts groups. Recently the boys and girls floorball team gleaned both coveted champion trophies in the 2007 National Floorball Competition.
MJC is also home to a student-published periodical, called "Musings@Meridian", which is headed by the College Publications Team, providing coverage on important school events and articles on issues ranging from fashion to current affairs.
The college's Service Learning Club is one of the busiest CCAs in school, constantly organising projects with beneficiaries such as the Spastic Children's Association of Singapore (SCAS; located next to the MJC Campus). The SLC has also planned overseas community involvement programmes to China. Recently in the limelight is the college's Business Club, which has won an array of awards for innovative business ideas within the first year of its operation. All CCA leaders are immediately inducted into the team of Meridian Leaders, which aims to empower students by honing their leadership skills.
[edit] The Students' Council
The Student's Council (or simply known as the SC) is in charge of enriching school life. They are a group of students elected by the student body to represent student interests and to plan major school events. Elections take place after a period of shortlisting and rallying, following which the council elects its own Executive Committee (or in short, EXCO) which includes the President, Vice Presidents(Assets & Admin), Head of Students' Affairs, Head of Public Affairs Head and Secretary.
Some of the activities that the MJCSC organizes includes Orientation 1 and 2, Orientation Group Leaders (OGL) Recruitments and OGL camps, Council Recruitment and Council Training Camps (CTC), J1 End of Year Bash and on top of that, an SC event whereby the SC will decide what type of event they will hold for the school and differs from year to year. On top of that, the SC provides day to day service to the Meridians in the form of vending machines, loaning of blazers and lockers and last but not least, the morning assembly.
[edit] History and Achievements
The college started operations in 2003 at the suggestion of R.Adm Teo Chee Hean, then Education Minister, to establish a new college in the Pasir Ris area, taking on the name "Meridian" to indicate a culture of aiming for the highest. The helm of the college was taken by Ms.Esther Lai.
Despite its relative infancy, the college has made remarkable achievements on both the academic (GCE 'A'-level examinations) and co-curricular fronts.
Between 2003 and 2004, the College Anthem, as well as the official school logo, were released on top of a bustle of activities including various public concerts hosted by performing arts groups, the annual MJC Open House/Learning Agora and Inter-House games. The activities in the college, arising from its mix of co-curricular and student-initiated projects, have created a vibrant and distinct school culture.
2005 proved to be an exciting landmark year for the college. The college hosted its official opening ceremony on the 25th of February, graced by R.Adm Teo Chee Hean, and observed its first ever College Day on the 23rd of July. Academic-wise, MJC's pioneer batch of graduating students (Class of 2003) made the news, exceeding expectations with excellent results, and the college clinched a Value Added Award in just 2 years since inception.
On the sporting front, the college's soccer team playing in the National A Division Inter-School Soccer Championships has been in the finals for the past 3 years and were crowned champions for the 2005 season, clinching their first President's Challenge Cup.
Performing arts groups did similarly well at the 2005 Singapore Youth Festival, clinching 4 gold awards (Symphonic Band, Choir, Malay Dance, Guitar Ensemble) and 2 silver awards (Modern Dance, Chinese Orchestra).
There is an equal emphasis on college events ("Love Meridian Day", to cite a particularly colourful celebration), leadership (Both the "Talent Management" and "Meridian Leaders" bodies are mainstays in the college) and community involvement (a hallmark of the college).
In 2008, the college set the Singapore record for the largest logo made of bottle caps as part of Orientation. <fact>

Born of a vision to be the best
Rising above the rest
We speak with one clear voice
As this is our choice
Cause we are..
Born of a vision to be the best
Rising above the rest
We speak with one clear voice
Yes this is our choice
Meridian yes we will be
The best
Feel the flame of our dream
Burn forever
As our journey here begins
We're together
With each step we take we know
Strength to strength we'll grow
As we set ourselves apart
Facing challenges ahead
We will overcome
With passion fervour we will strive
Spread our wings and fly
We will reach the highest star
Through Meridian
Yes our hopes and dreams will shine
Born of a vision to be the best
Rising above the rest
We speak with one clear voice
