Mere Theory are a South Australian indie rock band.

The band formed in 2000, and since then have supported the following bands: Millencolin, Alexisonfire, Rufio, Unwritten Law, MXPX, Anberlin, The Juliana Theory, Off Minor, Bouncing Souls, Midtown, Useless ID, Dropkick Murphys, Your Black Star, Gyroscope, After the Fall, Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Bodyjar, Grinspoon, COG, Kisschasy, The Hot Lies, The Open Season, One Dollar Short, BlueLine Medic, 28 Days, Antiskeptic, I Killed the Prom Queen, and The Nation Blue.[1]

Mere Theory regularly perform in Adelaide, the capital of their home state South Australia.[2] Until recently, they hadn't been able to achieve a large fan base due to the fact they only relied on word of mouth and tireless show playing to get their name noticed. Their unflagging work ethic and persistence ensured they would be heard Australia wide thanks to the odd play on indie rock radio stations such as Triple J and Radio Adelaide. These facts notably set them apart from other popular Adelaide bands. Nigel Black has said the name selection was "pretty random" but comes from the idea that nothing is certain, but "mere theory." In both their home town of Adelaide and particularly in Melbourne and the Gold Coast, they have received cult status among local music lovers. The large amount of fans they have on their myspace[3] and the amount of people who attend their gigs is testament to the rapidly growing appreciation for their no-frills, no-nonsense brand of music.

The band has a passionate melodic rock, but the local BLUNT magazine has declared, "It's too hard to box Mere Theory into a genre." In collaboration with Building Records, Mere Theory released two EPs: Towering Sun in 2002 and Disengage in 2004. Their tracks have appeared in compilation CDs of local artists. Their tracks have also received regular airplay on Australian national youth radio station Triple J.[1] Local DB Magazine, also noting the band's unique style and passionate energy commented upon one of their live shows saying "Mere theory blew me away with their technical ability and diverse style: their music is technical yet melodic, aggressive and at the same time very passionate. Standout moments included three part vocals... Mere Theory are one of the more dynamic rock outfits playing…a unique mix of heavy rocking guitar riffs, explosive drumming, intense three part vocal harmonies and a very distinctive style of heavy to mellow rock."

Their debut album, Catalan Atlas, is out through Boomtown Records 2007. Catalan Atlas has received rave reviews from local BLUNT, DB and Rip It Up magazines. In BLUNT issue #66, Catalan Atlas was dubbed one of the "Top 100 Albums You Should've Heard In 2007." The short review then went on to say "They had already released two fairly decent EPs, but Adelaide foursome Mere Theory took a giant leap in 2007 with their debut album, Catalan Atlas. Taking all the best bits from the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason and Elliott, then integrating them into their own Oz punk stylings, Mere Theory came out with a rock album of international standard."

[edit] Tours

2007 was certainly Mere Theory's year; coinciding with their debut album, Catalan Atlas release, they went on a national tour which kicked off in Adelaide on the 9th of November. During the tour, they graced Sydney, Melbourne, The Gold Coast, Canberra and Brisbane with their awe-filled presence. The tour wrapped up on the 13th of December. The new-look Mere Theory gained legions of new fans at home and abroad.

Matt Adey's tour diary suggested that the tour was a huge success and a whole lot of fun. In the Adelaide excerpt he said "We hit the stage around 10pm and the room filled as we launched into Every End Is A New Beginning. We pretty much played every song off the new album and few old ones (including Towering Sun) that really pleased our older fans. We played well and it was very loud. We enjoyed this show immensely, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came out to support us."[4]
