Merci Chérie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merci Chérie (English translation: "Thank You Darling") was the winning song in the Eurovision Song Contest 1966 performed for Austria by Udo Jürgens, the only occasion to date on which Austria has won the Contest. Despite the French of the title, the lyrics are almost exclusively in German.
The song was performed ninth on the night (following Portugal's Madalena Iglésias with Ele E Ela and preceding Sweden's Lill Lindfors and Svante Thuresson with Nygammal vals (Hip man svinaherde)). The final points tally for the song was 31, with first place coming at the head of an 18-entry field.

The song is an earnest ballad, with the singer thanking his lover for good times and positive memories as he leaves her.

The song was succeeded as Contest winner in 1967 by Sandie Shaw singing Puppet on a String for the United Kingdom.

The song was succeeded as Austrian representative at the 1967 Contest by Peter Horten singing Warum es hunderttausend Sterne gibt.
