Mercadia is the setting for the Mercadian Masques set of Magic: The Gathering.
Mercadia is a plane, most notable for its unique mountain, shaped as a giant cone, growing wider as it gets higher, on the top resting a large city. In the story, the city was founded by various Thran officials teleported there to escape Yawgmoth, and Ramos, who reaches god-like status among the natives, is a dragon engine transported there during the Sylex blast of the Brothers' War. Gerrard and his crew are forced to take a detour in Mercadia, temporarily losing the Weatherlight.
[edit] Locations on Mercadia
- Mercadia City: is a large city built around and on top of the flipped mountain. This mountain, Mount Mercadia, is approximately 5 miles wide at the top, but space foldes upon itself making the city even larger than that. Bartering and making deals is everything up here. Always read the fine print. Garbage is dropped over the edges of the mountain and forms a giant wall around it. Most of the city is covered in markets, where anything can be bought or sold.
- Surrounding Mercadia City, are large plains of dust. Mercadian magic can conjure dust storms that transport those inside through the desert, though only on the west side.
- Rushwood: (SW) The Cho-Arrim live in this forest. The Fountain of Cho, also known as the Navel of the World, is also here, outside their village. It is inscribed with the history of the Cho-Arrim and Ramos.
- Rishada: (E) Port-city and marketplace.
- Saprazzo: (E) A city built out at sea. It is in a half submerged volcanic caldera. The top of the city is dry, and the lower levels are below water. Here, the Shrine of the Matrix holds the Power Matrix.
- Deepwood: (NW) Guarded by ghouls.
- Ouramos: Where Ramos fell, in Deepwood. Guarded by dryads. The Bones of Ramos are here, as is Ramos himself.
- Deep Lands: (S)
[edit] The Story of Ramos
- The true story: Ramos was originally a Phyrexian dragon engine. Urza took him and transformed him to fight Mishra and help people, rescuing the wounded from the (Urza's) battlefield. When Urza unleashed the Sylex blast, Ramos flew ahead of it. He saw some merfolk and picked them up. He saw a galley and saved it along with the refugees inside; however, the weight slowed him and the blast caught him. Ramos, and the people he saved were blasted to Phyrexia. The people would die in Phyrexia, so Ramos, using the last of his strength, took them through a nearby portal he knew and into Mercadia. Both he and the people were on fire. Seeing their distress, Ramos's heart broke, and fell into the sea, becoming the Power Matrix. He put the merfolk into the sea, the ship's crew on the sand at Rishada, and some of the refugees in Rushwood, extinguishing the flames. When he saw that the rest were dead, he sprinkled their corpses in Deepwood. Energy gone and heartless Ramos and the ship, both burning, fell and crashed. The impact killed thousands, all because he had sought to save hundreds. His soul shattered. Time passed and life gradually returned. Ramos got up. Five pieces of his core were loose. Ramos set these on an altar to represent the ones who had died. He made Ouramos sacred, enlivened dryads from the trees, and raised the dead people in Deepwood to serve him. But he could not heal the world.
- The Peliam: Ramosans have a legend/prophecy of Ramos. It isn't true, but it is believed by many on Mercadia and is based on the story above: There was once a great battle between the gods Ramos and Orhop. Orhop, the evil god, was defeated. Ramos, seeing the destruction of the war, gathered the people and brought them to a better world. When he arrived, he was struck by an object in the sky. Ramos fell from the heavens and broke into three parts, Mind, Body, and Soul. The Cho-Arrim were borne on the Soul into the forest. The Saprazzans fell with the mind into the sea. Some on his body fell off and became Rishadans. Those that held on burned to death and now guard his Bones. All evils in the word exist because Ramos is broken. One day Ramos will return as a great metallic dragon, and if his parts were brought together, he will unite the world and banish evil. The Cho-Arrim believe that the Weatherlight is the Soul of Ramos. They saw it appear, soaring brightly through the sky and crash. The Saprazzans believe that the Power Matrix is his Mind. The five Bones of Ramos lie in Ouramos. Both the Power Matrix and the five powerstones called the Bones of Ramos are part of the Legacy. The Legacy was never built to fit together, they were merely a collection of powerful artifacts written by Urza, but...
