Description |
This is a full page ad placed in a magazine in 1938 by the Merritt-Chapman & Scott firm, touting their accomplishments and expertise. It has their logo and house flag at the bottom. |
Source |
The image was found in an eBay auction. The seller did not specify what magazine this was placed in, but the 1938 date seems credible, and it is likely it was a national magazine or trade magazine. |
Article | |
Portion used |
This is the entire page. However one page of a magazine typically represents less than 5% (sometimes as little as 1%) of the entire content of an issue. So the portion used is very low. |
Low resolution? |
At maximum resolution this image is less than 20% the area of the actual magazine page. It is very unlikely that any commercial use could be made of this advertisment or that reuse of it would injure the fortunes of whatever 70 year old magazine this was taken from. |
Purpose of use |
This ad illustrates the relative prowess and expertise, as well as prominence, of this firm at the time the ad was published, and is used to enhance the article to that effect. The image was also used to derive the logo Image:MerrittChapman 1938 logo2.png which is used in the infobox of the company and which has a separate fair use justification as a logo. |
Replaceable? |
Merritt-Chapman & Scott are defunct and have been for some time. It is not likely that a free image could be secured to fulfill the same purpose. Other similar fair use images might be found and if a better one is, more illustrative of the points this one makes, it should be used and this one deleted. However, absent such a finding, the article will suffer for the loss. |
[edit] Licensing
This is a copyrighted image that has been released by a company or organization to promote their work or product in the media, such as advertising material or a promotional photo in a press kit. The copyright for it is most likely owned by the company who created the promotional item or the artist who produced the item in question; you must provide evidence of such ownership. Lack of such evidence is grounds for deletion. It is believed that the use of some images of promotional material to illustrate:
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other usage of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Publicity photos. Additionally, the copyright holder may have granted permission for use in works such as Wikipedia. However, if they have, this permission likely does not fall under a free license. Please note that our policy usually considers fair use images of living people that merely show what they look like to be replaceable by free-licensed images and unsuitable for the project. If this is not the case for this image, a rationale should be provided proving that the image provides information beyond simple identification or showing that this image is difficult to replace by a free-licensed equivalent. Commercial third-party reusers of this image should consider whether their use is in violation of the subject's publicity rights. |
