Talk:Men's Rights

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've removed However, while the strongest advocates of women's rights are statistically more likely to be lesbian than women in the general population, there does not appear to be a higher than normal percentage of homosexuals amongst advocates of Men's rights.

Where are the statistics for this? I don't think that the above is accurate at all, and is a bit of a stereotype - many straight women call themselves feminist or are advocates of women's rights. Homosexuality isn't that common, compared to heterosexuality, so implying this means that the amount of advocates for women's rights is small... Dysprosia 09:14, 9 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Dysprosia, your thoughtfulness is appreciated.

I can understand your perspective but sincerely believe you are mistaken. To say that there is a higher proportion of lesbians amongst the strongest feminist advocates is certainly not the same as suggesting that all feminists, or even the majority of feminists, are lesbians.

There is plenty of evidence on the feminism pages that there is a higher than normal distribution of lesbians amongst the strongest advocates for feminism. From memory, Lesbianism is typically recorded as 3% or less of the female population. By comparison, the strongest advocates of feminism - as exemplified by NOW - have contained a much higher proportion of lesbians.

In addition, some high profile feminists have complained about the large influence of lesbians amongst feminist activists. From their descriptions, these did not sound like 3% or less. That is my case at this stage. If you still consider I am factually incorrect, please be kind enough to provide the disproving statistics.

Be assured the words were not written just to denigrate feminism. I am sure you wouldn't take the mention of lesbianism as a negative, in any case. Also, I have no desire to paint all feminists as ... whatever your expected stereotype was. It is interesting to observe and record the demographics influencing a movement, since it has a bearing on the focus of a movement. With time I would like to add a little more analysis on demographics in these movements.

I wish to add the words back with your 'understanding' on this - if it is at all possible. My understanding is that we all want facts, information and rational analysis.

Thanks again.

Ok, I see where you're coming from now, (but the case of NOW can't really speak for all feminisms as a whole :) and I'll try and add the stuff back with a bit more clarification. Thanks Dysprosia 12:41, 9 Nov 2003 (UTC)

On a different topic related to this page, why is "Men's Rights" usually capitialized on this page, but not "women's right's". Also, "Men's Right's" is inconsistent--sometimes only the "Men's" is in caps.TMillerCA

Yes, I briefly wondered about this and at first retained the initial capitalisation because it was the page topic. I have now tried to fix this by reverting to the use of lower case throughout. - H
