Menzies High School is a secondary school located in West Bromwich, a town in the West Midlands of England. It has Science College status. It was opened in 1902 as West Bromwich Grammar School and retained this status for approximately 70 years before becoming a comprehensive school during the 1970s.
It serves the Charlemont, Tantany, Hateley Heath and Stone Cross areas of West Bromwich. The Sixth Form College has over two-hundred students and are the largest Sixth Form in the Sandwell area. Mrs Catherine Hough is the current head of the Sixth Form, Mr John Phipps is her deputy. The current head teacher is Mr Glen Goddard.
In 2006, 16% of GCSE students at the school attained GCSE's at 'A*' to 'C' in 5 or more subjects (including English and Maths). This was the second lowest showing of any of Sandwell's 18 secondary schools - only Langley High School fared worse. In contrast, Menzies had been rated as Sandwell's top secondary school as recently as the early 1980s.
Currently there is a local teenage anti under-age drink campaign involving the West Midlands Police and local schools including also feeder schools, as the local area has a long-running problem with drug abuse and alcoholism.
[edit] Trivia
The school was imortalised when used as one of the filming locations for the 1986 film Clockwise, staring John Cleese.
