[edit] Fictional Character Biography
[edit] Origin
Not much is know about the being known as Mentor before his arrival on Earth. What is known is that he crash landed in Patriot City while escaping the forces of The Domain. After learning of Lord Dominion's plot to destroy Earth by giving the power of Energy X to is cruelest and most vile inhabitants, Mentor stole a freighter full of Energy X canisters and fled to Earth, intent of finding worthy men and women to endow with its power so that they may fight against Lord Dominion's forces. While making his daring escape, Mentor's ship was pursued and shot down by a fleet of Domain warships, releasing its cargo of Energy X into the atmosphere, particularly above Patriot City. After recovering from his crash landing, Mentor devoted himself to scouring the Earth in search of courageous men and women who had been empowered by Energy X to help aid him in his battle to protect Earth from the forces of Lord Dominion.
[edit] The Birth of Freedom Force
Mentor first appeared in Patriot City coming to the aid of Minuteman as he was ambushed by henchmen of the Russian spy, Sukhov. Mentor uses his psychic powers to buy Minuteman the time he needs to disable Sukhov's men. Mentor then helps his new ally track Sukhov and his remaining goons to a construction site. The pair battled through the remnants of Sukhov's gang. Again Sukhov is cornered and attempts to make a hasty escape when a stray Minute Missile strikes a liquid nitrogen tank, freezing Sukhov alive. After Sukhov is taken away by the authorities, Mentor brings Minuteman to the newly created base, the Freedom Fortress. Once there, Mentor informs Minuteman of his mission to locate super-powered humans to aid him in his battle against the Domain. Minuteman vows to aid Mentor in his mission to protect America, and the world, from the forces of evil, thus giving birth to the legendary team of heroes know as: FREEDOM FORCE!
[edit] Powers
Mentor's mind is his greatest weapon, possessing some of the most powerful telepathic abilities in the galaxy. While the true extent of his power is unknown, he has demonstrated the ability to drive people into a berserk rage, temporarily erase a mind to a blank slate, cure others of psychic trauma, and control minds. He is also able to directly attack the mind of his opponent to the point that it causes physical damage. His telepathic communication is so powerful that he is able to act as a psychic relay, allowing the members of Freedom Force to communicate to each other telepathically though his mind. Mentor's will and psychic powers are so great that he is virtually immune to both psychic and mystical attack, even showing an ability to counter magic spells with his psychic powers. Mentor has also displayed a limited form of astral projection and temporal awareness, as he was able to sense the subtle changes to the time stream caused by the villain, Blitzkrieg.
Mentor seems to be highly attuned to Energy X. He is able to sense when a being has been exposed to Energy X and also has some ability to manipulate energy, particularly projecting charged electron beams and generating psychokinetic force fields around himself. Mentor has the ability to levitate himself, but it is unknown if he does so through some form of telekinesis, or by some other means.
Mentor also possesses an extremely keen intellect and a vast knowledge of advanced technology, as well as the ability to speak hundreds of various languages. He is assumed to be responsible for the creation of the Freedom Fortress, with all of its high tech laboratory and computer equipment, and the Freedom Flier. He is also able to reprogram one of the Microwave robots sent back from the future to destroy Freedom Force. During the teams struggle against Blitzkrieg, Mentor is able to build a machine that allows him to use Energy X to manipulate the time stream and temporarily send members of the team back through time, further demonstrating his advanced intellect.
[edit] Possible allusions
Mentor's psychic powers are an obvious analog to Professor X, while his personality is very similar to that of the Martian Manhunter. Both Mentor and the Manhunter are depicted as supremely intelligent, though naive and somewhat out of touch with the people of Earth.[citation needed]
