[edit] adminship?
I just realized that you are not an admin? Yet you seem to do much admin-work. I will gladly nominate you, if you'd accept. There's just one thing, the nomination is unlikely to succeed if you have fewer than ~1000 edits. And I honestly have no idea how many edits you have made, from the size of your talk page, it must be easily >1000, but the "weekly" statistics seems to be broken, saying you have a glorious total of five. dab (ᛏ) 19:30, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry to interrupt, but I think this might help: [1]. Cheers, Smoddy (tgec) 19:38, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- ah, yes of course. Well, your hesitation only reconfirms my impression (of your "mopworthiness"), but it's true that the nomination would be jeopardied seeing your account is quite recent. I'll get back to you in a month or so, or, should I forget about it, feel free to ask me to nominate you any time. regards, dab (ᛏ) 19:49, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Whatever your actual admin status, you are already behaving like an admin should (ie in a trustworthy and workmanlike manner). You might as well get the mop to save the wear and tear on your knees when
scrubbing the floorsdealing with vandals. I independently came to this page to ask if you wanted to be nominated but I see that I am not the first -- well, that's not surprising. I'm inclined to press for your nomination now, even with your relatively short editing record but by all means if you want to wait a month or two more... -- Derek Ross | Talk 05:28, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Four things
First, I liked your response to SlimVirgin's query about your issues with rights-based theories. My one truly cathartic experience reading philosophy was reading Alasdair Macintyre's After Virtue: I think his put down of rights theory there wasn;t the strongest case he made in the book, but one way or another the book cured me of thinking of political issues in terms of rights.
Second, I've been trying to get more than "Interesting"-type feedback to a (rather obvious) observation I made some years back about the superficial similarity between the structure of Hare's utilitariansism and Frege's theory of reference: see my diary entry on it. Any reactions?
Third: I'm glad to see you want to get around to adding some substance to the modal logic page. Have you any comments on my "some suggestions" question on Talk:Possible worlds? My general idea is that we should have a self-contained article (my favourite title has changed to Necessary truth and possible worlds) that introduces the Lewisian view and how it has given way to the Kripkean view, which could serve as a unifying piece for modal logic as a whole. We could then do drastic surgery on the modal logic article, turning it into a souped up series of poiinters in the style of the logic article.
Last: CSTAR suggested (he claims I suggested) that logic isn't far off faetured article status. So (i) your assistance, once we actually get started, is very much appreciated, and (ii) I posted an appeal on Greg Restall's page that might be interesting for you.

[edit] Prison education
Hello! I hope that you'll find my replacement of the (obviously unacceptable) content of the article enough of an improvement ro consider changing your vote. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:12, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- While I usually don't approve of drastic rewrites to a page under voting, you obviously caught this one early on in the game, and now, thanks to you, we've got a right nice article. Kudos, and good job to you, sir! --InShaneee 02:23, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Edit conflicts
I've noticed on a few pages that you've mentioned repeated edit conflicts. I'm wondering if in fact you may be in conflict with your own previous edit. For the last few months, after saving, the edited page has not been reloading, and we're getting various messages like "server not responding" and similar, which are making people think the edit has not been saved. They press "save" again, and end up with an edit conflict, but often the edit has been (or is being) saved, and the conflict is with that saved edit. What I do to get round this is I keep a second browser window open (at least a second; often more) and when I get the "server not responding" message after saving, I use the second browser window to go either to my watchlist, or to the page I just saved, and check whether my edit is there. It almost always is there. I also copy my edit just in case it hasn't been saved, so that I have it in case the first browser window closes for any reason and I lose it. It can be a bit of a juggling act, but it's faster than waiting for saved pages to reload. I thought I'd pass this on in case it's helpful. Best, SlimVirgin 20:28, Mar 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks — yes, I've noticed the same thing; it's made editing a real pain at times. I don't think that any of mine have been due to that, though; I usually check to see what the differences are, and I'm generally clashing with someone answering the same message, or going back to correct their own message to which I'm responding. [edit] thanks for the welcome
Thanks for the welcome. I've been using wikipedia for a long time, and have just recently started making some contributions to it, as you noticed. I'm still in the stage of learning syntax, though I used MediaWiki for a class, so I know the basics.
Wikipedia is a very worthwhile project, and it's satisfying to be able to contribute to it.
You really give people an over-the-top welcome. Are you worried it might scare them compared with a less boxy version? --Audiovideo 14:30, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

At the moment, it's just a hunch...Earl Turner was a bit more vocal than VonBuvens, constantly used edit summaries like "typo" or "fix spelling" and frequently blanked his talk page where people complained about him - in comparison, VonBuvens looks relatively harmless, but I'll keep an eye on him -- Ferkelparade π 12:19, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] -ists
During discussion on the talk page, Talk:David Duke, you wrote:
- The crucial distinction between between saying that x is a supremacist and that x crusades for supremacy escapes me. Do we have to go through the encyclopædia changing 'so-and-so was a philosopher' or 'so-and-so was a modernist' to 'so-and-so practised philosophy' or 'so-and-so crusaded for (or practised) modernism'?
Rather than stir the pot over there, let me respond to you directly here. Here is my (evolving) theory of using controversial labels. If we write that, X is a ____ist, then it becomes a red flag for adherents of the person. Adherents will demand that we delve into the criteria for inclusion, the credentials and morals of the critics, etc, and considerable editing time is devoted to fighting over the label. On the other hand, if we simply list the objective, verifiable things that the person has done, it is much harder for other editors to find objections.
Yes, it is essentially the same thing to say, X is a ____ist instead of X does and says ____ist things. But, in my experience, the latter formula seems to be less prone to editing wars. Doing so takes longer to write in the first place yet saves time overall (I'm hoping). It's not a weasel, just the opposite: it is reporting exactly what happened and minimizing the editorializing. Anyway, that's my current approach to avoiding edit wars on controversial people. So in the case of Duke, I think that it is accurate to call him a white supremacist, but it may be more productive (and equally accurate) to simply describe the white supremacist things that he has said and done. [edit] Pottery -- and clay related articles.
Thanks for your message and looking over the Korean article/issues. There are a number of international differences in the clay world and our unknown might have a point from his culture's perspective. Perhaps, if and when he comes back, we can try to work out some common definitions. I keep an eye on Pottery things - will watch the Korean page. Comments welcome. WBardwin 13:56, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Our unknown appears to be a junior government official (see note below) with an admirable agenda, but I don't think they understand their articles will be "hacked" and changed once they are "accurately " written. Although their info would be very valuable on Wiki and I would love to have it, nothing can ever be set in stone here. Their purpose requires a web site seperate from Wiki. Will try to come to some agreement with them on semantics and organization as things progress. WBardwin 22:21, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Another note from our Korean contributors on Korean pottery talk page. They are still upset and seemingly confused. I left another note - trying to be reassuring. Would you do the same as an admin? Thanks. WBardwin 07:31, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Sorry for the misunderstanding -- for some reason I thought you were authority personified. I'm afraid we are dealing with a cultural barrier. Without a face to face meeting, I don't know how to reassure them. Would you know of an admin who might be willing to join our discussion? I haven't been around long enough to "know" many people. [edit] Korean Ceramics redirect to Korean pottery
From: POofYS.
Sir,
The Korean Ceramics article is being compiled by a group of scholars from Jeonju University, and a noted Korean ceramic institute in Seoul, but being templated out by our office by one of our secretaries. This is part of an initiative to get more accurate information on Korean classical arts, studies, royal history, and Korean Joseon era history on the internet. And as well to encourage young students and scholars to write in English on Korean history for foreigners.
We will lead templates for entries, but they will be followed up and verified by other Korean scholars and those on the net who want to contribute accurate and timely material.
For information please see here.
Ceramics experts will soon be having accounts and there extensive list of publications will indicate that the material emplaced within the Korean Ceramics article is accurate.
Should you wish you can correspond with us in Korean.
best wishes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:POofYS (message left by 65.95.123.208)
[edit] Interesting
Interesting that a 'random pager' and a philosopher to boot should, as an Outsider, agree with a summary (RFC) that is debunked only inches below. Perhaps the bonhomie of Swan School, Lake School (?) or even BEC (surely not EF!!!) has worn thin? Never seen any contributions from you on those pages so at a guess you've been roped in. Whatever happened to independent thought? The Number 11:30, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
You have a nice garden though. At a guess it's Blandford Avenue or maybe the exhibition one in Beechcroft? If you're really rich it's St Margaret's.....The Number 12:17, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Spirit R/rover
Please discuss this name change in the talk page! We just had reached consensus about the article name when you changed it again. Please, also revert it back to the original until this is fully dicussed. Awolf002 14:45, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- You changed the article to Spirit Rover, but left Opportunity rover uncapitalized. I changed it back to Spirit rover for consistency, since Google seems to indicate that capitalization of both words is not the most common usage. -- Curps 16:49, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- There's a discussion of the naming issues at Talk:Opportunity rover, but you have not participated in it. The official title Mars Exploration Rover (hence MER-A and MER-B) is capitalized, but "Spirit rover" or "Spirit Rover" is not an official title and capitalization or lack thereof is haphazard (though lowercase seems to prevail slightly). The actual names are simply Spirit and Opportunity, hence arguably the page titles ought to be Opportunity (rover) and Spirit (rover). The naming convention here could be the same as the naming convention for ships: the name of a ship doesn't include "Boat" or "Ship" as part of the title, the name is simply the name, with the standard Wikipedia convention of putting a disambiguation in parentheses if necessary.
- I'm not sure what we should do at this point. If you agree, we could move to Opportunity (rover) and Spirit (rover), or you could join the discussion on the talk page, or we could go through Wikipedia:Requested moves. -- Curps 17:25, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- PS, the change to Opportunity Rover created some double redirects. I was not going to rename it back, pending discussion, but now I think it is best to do so for now, as the simplest way to fix the double redirects. Final resolution, of course, remains pending. -- Curps 17:30, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
The naming issues are being discussed at Talk:Opportunity rover, with a mention and link also at Talk:Spirit rover. See the "Why the maddeningly obscure article title?" sections (referring to the original titles of MER-A and MER-B). -- Curps 17:33, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
It's not really an interminable squabble. It's just that the page titles were MER-A and MER-B for a long time until quite recently, which seemed to violate Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names). There was a brief debate about what to rename them to, and someone just went and did the rename to Opportunity rover and Spirit rover. I then renamed all the "MER-A timeline" pages to "Spirit rover timeline" and the "MER-B timeline" pages to "Opportunity rover timeline" accordingly. So that's the brief backstory of what you stumbled into. :-) -- Curps 17:49, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I saw that you have found the talk page I was referring to, but forgot to link to, as well. Sorry about that. Awolf002 20:24, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] The Number
I was also surpised, then, to be jumped on by you. Is your point that, in the interests of cuddly-bunnyhood, we should ignore whatever this user does? Peace is all very well, and certainly something to be aimed at — but that doesn't excuse reprimanding someone whose words have been twisted, and who is trying to set the record straight.
- I do apologize, but you must understand this issue has been dragging on for far too long as it is, and your attempt at solely "trying to set the record straight" does seem a little too edgy to be just that—vide a phrase like "in a way that's familiar to those who have encountered him before", read: we, the in-crowd, are well aware of his shenanigans and here's yet more demonstration.
- No, it is not my intention to consort with fluffy mammals of any kind, nor to excuse TN for whatever he does, nor to deprive you of a chance to accurately represent what you say. But in the interests of good faith, or cuddly-bunnyhood for all I care, let's try to not perpetuate the same patterns of argumentation that have been demonstrated before. If The Number drags a misrepresented argument onto an irrelevant talk page, then don't trounce over him with a statement that amounts to "bad faith again, why do we even bother"? Just point out what isn't kosher about it in your opinion and leave it at that. Maybe you were trying to do just that and it's just my oversensitive nature reading too much into it here. It's possible.
- Look, the last thing I want is get into an argument with you! I trust we can at least agree that TN was improper in posting his comment to the RFC talk page, and I hope you can also agree that your "setting the record straight" might have been a tad overenthusiastic in light of the context. Do you mind if I post a link to this discussion on the RFC talk page, seeing that the "damage" is done? JRM 15:01, 2005 Mar 21 (UTC)
- In light of what The Number apparently really was trying to ask, I've refrained from dragging this discussion onto the RFC page after all. It's getting off-topic enough as it is... JRM 16:19, 2005 Mar 21 (UTC)

[edit] Request for help
Thank you for your welcome!
I've enjoyed the little editing I've been able to do, though trying to stay out of trouble is harder than it at first appears.
I do have one request, as I don't know who else to ask at this point. I tried to use the "move" feature several times, but have been unsuccessful. Every time I click on it, it says that I must be logged in, even though I already am. In any case, I found Mathew Walker knot, created Matthew Walker knot, cut and pasted the old to the new, and redirected the old to the new. I know now that this is taboo.... Could you (or do you know an admin who could) clean this move up for me?
Thanks in advance and again for your kind welcome. BoomHitch 08:22, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: 2/(4+1) things
Thanks for your post. The article you sent onto me looks very interesting: I'm guessing that Peter King doesn't explicitly draw the Sinn-Bedeutung analogy, but easily might have.
WRT the drive to make logic a featured article, I think you will be able to help us out in three areas:
- I think the preamble to the logic article contains several overgeneralisations: I would very much appreciate help in reformulating that, when I get doesn to it (it might not happen before May: I'm moving to New Haven then, and everything is upin the air here);
- The dialectical logic section doesn't really work. It really is meant to introduce in one section Aristotelian logic and what is normally taught today in College logic courses. A better name than dialectical logic would be a start here...
- There is no modal logic section! You could help with putting a text here. Part of my idea for the Necessary truth and possible worlds article is that this, and not modal logic, would be the main article link here.
Thanks again for your comments. --- Charles Stewart 08:34, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: A move problem
I see someone else has already tracked down the reason for the new user's page move difficulty. That sort of vandalism really was getting out of hand, so I can understand the reasoning behind such a drastic change.
As for the article, I've deleted BoomHitch's copy/paste creation and moved the original article along with its edit history to the proper location. I didn't restore Boom's edits (which would have merged the two histories), because there wasn't anything substantial; s/he just fixed the spelling to reflect the move, and I've since done the same. If there's anything else, please feel free to let me know. (By the way, splendid garden! The clematis looks strong and healthy, and your overall choice of colour placement works very well.) -- Hadal 04:00, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

- By the way, the reason there was no explanation in the edit summary, and it was marked as minor, was because I used the "rollback" function that all administrators have access to. It automatically reverts and marks the edit as minor. It just seemed easier to remove the notice that way, but perhaps I should have done it the long way so that I could leave an explanation. No offense meant. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 15:33, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Welcome
Thanks for the welcome. A couple questions about Wikipedia that I'm sure have already been discussed.
1. Why does the discussion format have to be so ungainly?
2. How come a private messaging system isn't available?
3. Tables are hard to create - are there any plans to create a button push template table maker?
Re: Welcome Welcome
Thanks the response.
1. What do I mean by ungainly? Well I compare this discussion format to the modern discussion boards you will commonly find everywhere on the net. This format is not as easy to use as their are still technical tricks that escape the regular user such as the name tag problem I just encountered. Creating "threads" also requires a bit of wikicode knowledge. These tricks build up into an entry barrier into discussion that thwarts the openness of discussion wikipedia is based on. Does wikipedia intend to change discussion pages into a more modern format?
2. Private message - not meant as a request for secrecy, but as a reference to the more modern tool widely available on most discussion sites. I'm sure anyone familiar with the modern discussion board recognizes how built in private messaging leads to an explosion in discussion. A convenient one button messaging system to another user eliminates any bare inconvenience email possesses. The messages don't have to be private - just convenient. The jumping around to another page so I can reply regarding answers from another page is a bit disconcerting to discussion!

- PS. It unfortunate that no one has requested that any of the pages be protected. If some one did I would happily oblige. ;) -JCarriker 12:23, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)
- I am in the process of protecting the pages, for now. I don't know how to range block, but I know admins who can. I'm giong to protect the pages for now and them see if then lift them after the range block has been instituted. -JCarriker 12:36, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)
- I must go off-line now. I have protected the pages, which should provide a bit of a respit but is not desirable in the long term. I have alereted Snowspinner of your and Asbestos' request. Hopefully he can provide you with guidence. -JCarriker 13:09, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)

hi, i'm just testing out the format for the lines. It will be available shortly. Thanks. I'm not experimenting... it's an actual article :) I will comment out the testing part then.
Well, I'm going to actuall write about each station, so I think it will be good to have an individual article. I'm stuck though on how to customise the line indicator! Thanks
- OK. Sorry for that, first of all. I was really, really pressed for time to finish that article in a few minutes. It's good that it's worked out. Thanks, Ronline 12:23, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Bongsha
I couldn't agree with the speedy since it clearly is a modified bong of some kind, so not a nonsense entry. It looks like vanity, which cannot be speedied but must go through vfd. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 13:24, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] rita quintero
good morning, I do feel apologetic that you are dissappointed in my novice talents in adding or editing a page, but i am new at this. I do hold exclusive rights to copyright of any picture or information regarding Ms Quintero. I guess your expertise was not clear in direction as to how to classify them as "owner". sorry.
As for my editing, what you have decided to be correct, isn't neccessarily corrrect. I appreciate your uploading the images, i did not know how to attach them to the page after uploading. There's no need to insult me. Ms Quintero is a Jazz singer. Thank you for your editing. jfi2121/silverado
got it. thank you.
- I didn't feel disappointed in your abilities, only in your refusal to respond to my queries (and advice). I marked the images as possible copyright violations because you didn't add a copyright template to them, nor answer my question as to their status.
- I'm not sure why you think that I insulted you; checking my comments, I still don't see it. However, on no definition of 'jazz' of which I'm aware is Quintero a jazz singer. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:51, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway
Dear Sir,
I recently added a stub for the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway. It appears that you subsequently added a comma directly after 'Waterville'. While this may be acceptable English, and I have no problem with that, it is in this case incorrect since the legal corporate name of the railroad does not include this comma. Including this comma makes it more difficult for one who is interested in this railway to locate it in Wikipedia. Please move this page back.
Thank you.
Mike
[edit] Your PKK revert
I can see that you just reverted the unsupported POV section ==The Result== back into the Kurdistan Workers Party article. Why did you do that? You didn't explain yourself on the articles talk page. Stereotek 21:03, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hey Mel leave us kids alone
You're of age I thought to enjoy the Pink Floyd reference. While Wikipedia is global, on behalf of God fearing Americans everywhere I hereby issue you a directive to cease and desist your vandalism of the Oliver North article. You clearly know little of his legal status and while you claim to be British, you seem to know little of British justice on which the American system was based and subsequently much improved after we kicked your ass in the Revolutionary War. Remember that? You would do well to bear that conflict in mind the next time you go defiling the article of an American patriot. Stick to the books Oxford scholar, they are much less challenging than the USMC. You have been warned. Your blocking is imminent. Ger6 17:47, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mel you make sound like stuck pig
Mel instead of debating you attack me like a pig. Well oink to you. Your blocking is imminent. Ger6 18:08, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Mel, I left a warning on his talk page. I haven't checked all the diffs carefully, but be careful, because even to revert one sentence more than three times in 24 hours is a 3RR violation. If I were you, I'd let 24 hours pass and discuss it on talk in the meantime. Best, SlimVirgin 18:18, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
- I see he's done it again, but that may mean you've violated it too. WP is so slow today, I can't get in to check the diffs properly. I also can't see where you've reported it: it should go to WP:AN/3RR, but only report it if you're sure you haven't violated it too. Remember that a partial revert is still a revert. By the way, the edit counter is working again, which I think you liked to use. See here. SlimVirgin(talk) 18:47, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blenheim Reef
Hi Mel,
thank you for "tidying up" the Blenheim Reef article.
Do you think it's a good idea
1) to replace all numbers by words (e.g. thirty instead of 30)? 2) to replace all standard unit abbreviations by their full terms (e.g. kilometre instead of km)? 3) to use the British spelling (metre instead of meter)?
Most articles I've seen are not written like this.
Further comments on those points:
1) For essay texts, there is a rule in the German language to write natural numbers from one to twelfe as words, and larger ones as numerals. I don't know if there is a similar rule in English (it's not my native language). But the deeper question is whether a Wikipedia article should be an essay text or rather an condensed piece of information.
2) Instead of writing out "kilometre" or "kilometer", I would suggest placing a link on the unit abbreviation to an article where metric units of length are explained.
3) I'm afraid that the dissemination of British spelling could trigger spelling wars. I would rather succumb to American spelling (as in "kilometer"), recognizing that American English by far dominates the English-language part of the Internet (no, I'm not American).
Lastly, a question about "stubbing":
How much information does an article have to provide, so it won't be stubbed? I think there are many places in the World that are unimportant enough to be adequately treated with four lines of text, which is too much for inclusion in the parent article (here: Chagos Archipelago), and which therefore should be enough for its own article.
Greetings, Peter Dotzauer
[edit] Oliver North page
I'd like to drop a note to say thanks for your diligence on the Oliver North matter. I've had to revert several times over the past few weeks, and I appreciate you getting the problem in front of an administrator's eyes. Hopefully something positive will last. --Holdek 06:40, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gemilang
hello, i noticed you redirected the page Gemilang to Jaclyn Victor... why can't it have its own page?
then why is the following page allowed instead? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Since_U_Been_Gone
it's just the same thing, right?
i'm new to this, so please excuse me if i'm mistaken
[edit] hello
i've already added the cover image so...
if i add the track listing and pictures, album cover, more information, will you just leave it alone?
i see youve redirected the since youve been gone to the breakaway album
mind you, gemilang is the name of the album --Celviano 14:25, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] ambiguity
The word "Chinese philosophy" has been used to mean a style of doing philosophy that is supposedly different from that of Western philosophy, hence the ambiguity of "Chinese philosopher" follows. Obviously, this is not a simple question of an individual philosopher's nationality.
[edit] Chinese
I don't agree with you. If "Western Philosopher" means something more than geographical, so does "Chinese philosopher". Besides, Philip Zhai received his philosophical training (and the Ph.D. degree) in the US, and taught philosophy in the US for many years, and then moved to China a few years ago. It's not clear what his nationality is.
