In the fictional Pokémon Universe, a Pokémon Master is considered to be one of the greatest Pokémon trainers. Becoming a Master is the typical goal of a Pokémon trainer, although how the title is achieved has never been fully explained in any Pokémon media.anime and manga feature protagonists such as Ash Ketchum who strive to become a Pokémon master, while in the Pokémon videogames, the player takes on this role.

In the various Pokémon video games, the player assumes the role of a young Pokémon trainer who sets out on a journey to become a Pokémon master. This is achieved by:
- Capturing and raising Pokémon to complete the Pokédex;
- Battling and defeating the eight Pokémon Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and the Pokémon League champion
In addition, the player may also compete in Pokémon contests to win ribbons, although this is not mandatory for the game to be completed.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red completes the Pokémon League, although it is never mentioned if this qualifies him as a Pokémon Master. In the manga Pocket Monsters Zensho, a character who is also named Red defeats the Elite Four and then his rival. More relevantly, this graphic novel goes as far as to claim that Red had become a Pokémon Master, before completing the Pokédex.

There is one case in the television series where a person has been called a Pokémon Master. In the raw version of The Mandarin Island Miss Match, Kanna being called a Pokémon Master. However, it was not stated how she achieved this title.
