Article policies

The peak position of Next Best Superstar is wrong. Red Boy

  • What makes you say that? Fi9 23:03, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

The article looks a bit of a mess; half the images need to go. Could editors decide on which should be kept and which not? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:13, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I agree with you Mel and think we should start looking at copyrights here. Since reading your comment the first time, some images have been removed, however....'MelC2.jpg' and 'MelC.jpg' are, I believe from a promotional photo-shoot for Beautiful Intentions. 'MelC-Live.jpg' is a fan photograph posted on the [Denden forums] (the other 2 were also the subject of a thread there and probably lifted from there). I have been thinking about an image for the entry for a while and had thought about calling upon the Denden community. There are a lot of talented photographers there, but one, Stanie, stands out above the rest. She is known and respected by Miss Chisholm and would, I'm sure, agree for her work to be released under GNU. I would ask Werdna2004 to remove or cite sources for the images he/she has posted. If Werdna2004 can satisfy the requirements of Wikimedia then fair enough, otherwise, I shall approach Stanie for permission to use a photograph to illustrate this entry. Finally, thank you, again, Mel Etitis for all the work you have contributed to this article. I had been watching it for a long time, while nothing happened, took a few weeks off, and have found a plethora of edits. Your attempts at keeping it tidy and Wikified are appreciated. To Werdna2004, thank you for your interest in this article, Wikipedia relies on editors just like you for it's survival. Please learn how to use the 'Show Preview' function, it will make your edits so much more elegant. Fi9 04:57, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vocal profile

I've removed this (not for the first time, though previously it was incomplete):

==Vocal profile==
Voice type: Full Soprano
Highest note: D6 (Closer)
Lowest note: E3 (Something's gonna happen)
Vocal range: 3 octaves (E3-D6)
Highest note in chest voice: G5 (Something's gonna happen)

Aside from its use and accuracy (and formatting), what's the source? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:41, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

It's just been put back, with no attempt at discussion, as:
==Vocal Profile==
+ * Highest note: D6 (Closer)
+ * Highest note in chest voice: G5 (Something's Gonna Happen)

--Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:35, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

And it's been put back again, and again with no explanation. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:15, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
And again. I've left messages on his Talk page (as he's now opened an account), but he's ignoring them. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:08, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vocal Profile

Hi, I'm the one who posted that information about her vocal range.

A girl who studies about notes and octaves said Mel C hit a D6 on Closer, and then I measured the note through MuseBook Tuner, and it was D6 indeed. The other notes I also measured through MuseBook Tuner, which is very accurate. I'm just not sure about Mel C's voice type.

Sorry I'm late, but I didn't know how to reply to your messages

That's OK, The trouble is that this is all original research, and as such is not permissible in a Wikipedia article. If there's an independent source of the information, either in print or on the Web, which you could cite, the information could go back in. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 18:47, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
Is it, really? I mean, the song is published, so this is just a measurement, not a formerly unpublished fact. If I pointed out that someone had a red dress in a photo, without giving any other reference than the photo itself, would that also be original research?

[edit] Northern Star sales

If a UK album is described as triple platinum it must by definition of sold at least 900,000. Fi9 23:03, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Recent revert

I've just reverted an anon's removal of information about a song's use for a soap opera, and the addition of the claim that "Sporty Spice" is apt becauee her brother's a racing driver. In the case of the former, no reason was given; if the information is false, then it should go of course, but is it? In the latter case, it just seems completely wrong; a nickname is appropriate because of the nature of the bearer, not of her friends and relatives (unless the nickname is something like "Friendless Spice" or "Orphan Spice"...). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:46, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Is this really true?

"She has co-written eleven chart topping singles — more than any other female artist in chart history."

This just don't seem true. I think it should be cleared that what chart does this really mean. I think it is the UK single chart? What about artist like Madonna, who has had hits in UK chart ever since the early 80's and she co-writes her songs as well, so... Something just don't seem to match here. And her old band mate Geri Halliwell has also co-written all her songs and 8 out of 9 of her solo singles have been in top 10 and then the singles with the Spice Girls that she was included makes it 16 singles that she was included went to top 10.

--L.a.m.b 21:05, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Reply: that extract, taken from her official website, talks about chart toppers, meaning #1 records in the UK (both with the Spice Girls and as a solo artist). Madonna has had 11 #1's in the UK too, but when this text was published 'Hung Up' had not been released yet. And as for Geri, she has indeed achieved 11 #1's too (both with the Spice Girls and as a solo artist). So the "more than any other female artist in chart history" thing is not true (given that both Madonna and Geri co-wrote all their chart toppers, if which I'm not 100% sure)

--s702nv4e 21:02, 06 December 2005

11 #1's from an english born artist...

http://www.everyhit.com/record1.html

...is an authentic source of UK Chart info, and the disputed sentence seems to talk about the record described on this site as "appearing" on 11 No1 records, not necessarily co-writing them. However, Mel's not holding this record anymore, as Madonna's Hung Up went No1 last year, and so did Sorry in February, so the record now is held by her with 12.

Madonna did co-write 11 of these songs (American Pie is by Don McLean of course), which would create a tie with Mel, provided that she did co-write all SG songs (I think she did, by the way), but if we're talking about writing credits it's not only Madonna we should look at. There are people like Kathy Dennis who write for other artists but never performing. I don't know much about her, but I do know she wrote Can't Get You Out of My Head for Kylie.

Bottom line:

"She has co-written eleven chart topping singles — more than any other female artist in chart history." is definitely not true anymore, not even restricted to the UK charts only, now that Sorry's gone No1 so Madonna co-wrote 11 of her No1s.

[edit] Reason widely considered what?

Although a commercial failure (relative to the financial investment in the project) and not particularly well received by music critics, Reason has proved to be popular amongst Melanie's fans, if not widely considered their favourite of her albums.

Eh... Source? And how would that explain the fact that in her German tour - I personally attended one of the concerts - she only played one song from her second album?--Pecholobo 13:44, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tattoo Placement in two album covers

Did anybody notice that Mel C has her tattoos switching sides in the album covers Beautiful Intentions, and Northern Star? Looks like the person who made the album cover decided to flip it horizontally... it's not strictly a Wikipedia issue, just pointing it out... Kareeser|Talk! 18:38, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Someone's just asked this from Mel in an interview and she said on the cover of BI she is looking into a mirror - that's why the image is flipped. The cross is on her left arm.

[edit] Singles - chart placing information

I think that the Singles information should include the chart placings for all the countries, not only UK, Germany and Switzerland.. as she has recently stopped releasing in UK and had success in Portugal, Spain, Austria, Australia, etc.

[edit] Major re-write needed

This article is in desperate need of a complete re-write.

Its a very poor article littered with speculation, un-sourced and incorrect statements and is full of points of view. I've tried to remove as much of the inappropriate information as I can - but its still a sub-standard article. Rimmers 23:37, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Singles chart

Poland don't have singles marketing, so I deleted Poland info in singles section.

[edit] Information

Beautiful Intetnions and First Day of My Life certifications officially can be found on melaniec.net news section.

[edit] Discography doesn't show work with spice girls

Why is this? Normally members of past bands still have their material with that band listed in their discography? --Joewithajay 17:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

2bh I dont see any reason to include it with her solo work. The Spice Girls are clearly marked within the article and there are links to the Spice Girls discography in the template at the bottom of the page. Perhaps a link directing to the Spice Girls discography could be included at the top of solo discography? Rimmers 19:12, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images

While I love seeing pictures of this beautiful woman, I wonder whether the article needs so many. There's virtually an entire column of them, when surely a picture in her infobox and her album (and perhaps single) covers should suffice, shouldn't they? I've not removed them, as I wanted to see what the general concensus was. -- JediLofty User | Talk 12:17, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Also, having the images switch sides makes the article very hard to follow. If we HAVE to have the images, they should remain on one side, to make reading the article easier. -- JediLofty User | Talk 13:02, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I think the article looks much cleaner now. Incidentally, is the Image we have in the infobox allowed (Iwcouttake03.jpg)? It was removed by Rimmers at 21:39 last night during an image cull! The others were marked as having no licence; does the one that's being used not fall under that? -- JediLofty User | Talk 08:50, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Paul Jensen?

I don't know where this stuff about her being Paul Jensen's assistant came from! I Googled and found a message board where someone keeps posting about it (the other forum members seem to be of the opinion that the poster is a little... how can I put it... deranged?

The poster has been banned, by the look of it, but I wonder if that is who's posting here, or if they just read the same board that I did. -- JediLofty User | Talk 15:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Its vandalism Rimmers 16:21, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Is it? I guess I'm just trying to assume good faith. -- JediLofty User | Talk 16:56, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Active in European Charts

What does the asterisk with active in Europen charts mean? I haven't seen this on any other artist's page. I haven't removed it, as that might fall under the 3RR! -- JediLofty User | Talk 13:38, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

It means that this singles still in singles top charts in European countries!!! Aaliyax (talk | contribs) 20:22, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Does that really belong in an encyclopedia? Surely they'll be changing all the time? What are you using as a source? -- JediLofty User | Talk 22:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

It's not only in Melanie C page!! Also Christina Aguilera's discography has this article and i have seen it in other musicions too. I fallow all charts, cose am a big fan of Melanie Chisholm and this 3 singles still in Top100 sigles charts in European countries.

[edit] Re-write Melanie Chisholm page

IT NEED A COMPLETE RE-WRITE, COSE THIS IS TOO POOR FOR SO BIG ARTIST LAIKE MELANIE CHISHOLM AND HAVEN'T MUCH OF HER CARRIER AND NO ANY INFO ABOUT HER PERSONAL LIFE!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aaliyax (talkcontribs) 14:57, 25 April 2007 (UTC).

Please don't shout. ;-)
I have to say that the article is much better than it was, even a few weeks ago, Removal of the excess images helped, I think. There aren't many sources about Mel's personal life, as she's quite a private sort of person, which is why there's not much information in the article. How would you improve it? -- JediLofty User | Talk 15:22, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

There aren't many sources about Mel's personal life???This article HAVE NOT ANY INFORMATION ABOUT IT!!! Like Mel is old virgin, sorry for that!!! And why - really, why this article haven't a pics of this great personality, working 12 years in music industry? It's not serious, really, and informations about albums - only some words!!!—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aaliyax (talkcontribs) 13:44, April 25, 2007 (UTC)

  • The key concept here about adding info about Mel's personal life is that we need reliable sources for that. If you can find sources, feel free to add to the article. Tabercil 23:41, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Well said, Tabercil. Aaliyax, I find it hard to follow what you're trying to say sometimes. If the article doesn't mention something that you think it should (and you can find reliable sources to back it up) then add it. That's what Wikipedia is all about! As for images, The article had FAR too many before. We have a properly copyrighted one, now, and that looks good. Try to remember that this is an encyclopedia article, not a fan site. -- JediLofty User | Talk 08:09, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Why is there no personal information in this article?

Did she or virgin records write it? Why is anything on her personal life deleted, or is she more powerful than any other celebrity and questions about her sexuality, lovers and life outside music are strictly private? Reaper7 23:01, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I was thinking the same ! -- Beardo 21:16, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
The article, while by no means bad, does have a very "corporate," commercial feel. I wonder if the bulk of the unregistered-user IP edits could possibly be, say, employees of a record label or PR firm? KevinWho 23:14, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Even here? I thought for sure there would at least be some personal information being discussed for inclusion. For instance, true or not, the accusation that she's a lesbian has dogged her enough to be cited here. Her denial, as well. It's odd that it hasn't even been discussed here. 24.47.146.86 —Preceding comment was added at 10:37, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
