Melton is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the town of Melton, in the suburb of Melton South, on the Ballarat railway line. The station is staffed full time and is in Metcard Zone 2. It is also the end of the Melton line under the suburban Metcard ticketing system.
[edit] Facilities
Melton is located between Brooklyn Road and Staughton Street, with station access from both. Shops are located near the station.
The station consists of two side platforms. Platform 1 contains a small shelter, while platform 2 contains a large weatherboard building with an enclosed waiting room, kiosk (open week days) and a ticket office inside. A large Metcard machine is located on the platform outside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small Metcard machine is located on platform 2. Ticket validation machines are available on both platforms.
[edit] History
Melton station opened on Wednesday, 2 April 1884, when the line from Braybrook Junction (now Sunshine station) was opened. The line was extended westward to Parwan station in 1886, and being on a single track section of track, the station served as a crossing loop from this time. By 1889 the station had an interlocked signal box, single passenger platform, and a three road yard. A goods shed also existed across from the passenger platform.
In 1987 the yard was rationalised to main line and crossing loop, but it was not until 1991 that the second platform was added. As part of the Regional Fast Rail project control the the signalling was transferred to Ballarat signal box in 2005.
