Melos Quartet

The Melos Quartet is a German string quartet based in Stuttgart that was in existence from 1965 to 2005.

They took their name from the ancient Greek word for music, which is also the root of the word melody.

They were planning a farewell tour in 2005, when Wilhelm Melcher, the first violinist died unexpectedly just before his 65th birthday.

They recorded a performance of the Schubert String Quintet in C major (D. 956) with Mstislav Rostropovich as the second cellist on the Deutsche Grammophon label. They recorded a 3 CD set of the Haydn Quartets on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Also recorded the complete Mendelssohn and Schubert String Quartets on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
