[edit] Rise to stardom

Thornton graduated from Camelback High School in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born to a Mexican mother and African-American father.[1] Her talent was first discovered at an elementary school talent show when she sang Mariah Carey's "Without You".

She saw the Pussycat Dolls on MTV and heard they were auditioning for a new group member. Thornton went to the audition and was recruited in December 2003. For her audition, Thornton only sang and was still accepted into the group. As with the other Dolls, she is a salaried employee of Interscope Records.

[edit] Solo career

Thornton started her solo career collaborating with rapper Jibbs in the song "Go Too Far" in his debut album Jibbs feat. Jibbs. She has stated on her Official MySpace Blog and in several interviews for fans to keep an ear out for her music. Melody stated that she would like to have her solo album released soon with collaborations with many artists that she admires but are not very famous.[2] In an interview with CELEBRITYINTERVIEW.TV at the Cabanna Club in Hollywood, she confirmed that she has been recording and writing songs for her solo efforts. Thornton recently stated on an interview with Chilso that she would like to have a few Spanish songs to show her heritage and to get her learning her Spanish background.[3]

While Nicole Scherzinger contributed most of the group's lead vocals on the first album, Thornton also added lead vocals to many tracks. With Carmit Bachar's departure from the group, Thornton now performs "Fever" alone during live concerts.[4] She is also known for her melismatic vocal runs and ad-libs and her falsetto registrated harmonies. Thornton is the only Doll other than Nicole Scherzinger who has had any formal singing training.

Conversely, Thornton is also the only member of the Pussycat Dolls who had no formal dance training prior to her entry into the group; she was accepted into the group solely on her vocal abilities. However, since the group's rise to stardom, her dancing skills have greatly improved, and she is able to perform the complex dance routines that the group is renowned for. She often assumes near-center positions during live performances.

[edit] Personal life

When asked in an interview, "What do you look for in a guy?", she replied, "I’m young, so I’m still pretty shallow, and I go for muscles... I like guys that are buff! There’s nothing wrong with that. I mean, he’s gotta be intelligent... sometimes."[5] She Has Also been linked to rapper Bow Wow. By July of 2007, the two had been together for a few months.[6]
