Melodifestivalen 2008 was the 47th Melodifestivalen, and the selection for the 48th song to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest. It was held between February 9 and March 15. It was hosted by Kristian Luuk, who also hosted the 2007 event.[1] He was assisted by two sidekicks, Björn Gustafsson and Nour El-Refai. The deadline for the submission of songs was 25 September 2007.[2] A record of 3 489 songs were received.[3] The winner of the competition (Charlotte Perrelli) will represent Sweden in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, to be held in Belgrade, Serbia on 22 May 2008. A new rule—Lex Agnes—is in place in 2008. Each submitted entry must include a document about who sings on the demo version. It is named after Agnes Carlsson, who was disqualified from the 2007 competition for publicly revealing details of her song before the deadline.[4]

[edit] Semifinals

Twenty-eight of the semifinalists were announced in early December 2007,[5] and the remaining four (the wildcards) were announced in January 2008. Among the contestants were two former Melodifestivalen and eventually Eurovision winners (a first for the contest): Charlotte Perrelli and Carola Häggkvist; and several former finalists including E-Type, The Poodles, Sanna Nielsen and Linda Bengtzing.

Four semifinals and a Second Chance round determined the ten finalists of Melodifestivalen 2008. Each semifinal featured eight songs. The first of these, held in Göteborg, was held on 9 February 2008. Amy Diamond and Christer Sjögren reached the final. The following week in Västerås, Rongedal and Sanna Nielsen booked their places in the final. In Linköping, 2006 runners-up Bodies Without Organs qualified, along with Frida Muranius. A week later the festival reached Karlskrona, where 1999 Eurovision winner Charlotte Perrelli reached the final, joined by Linda Bengtzing. The Second Chance round adopted a knock-out format for the second time; on 8 March 2008, eight artists, including Johnson & Häggkvist and E-Type & The Poodles, competed for the final two places at the Globe Arena. Nordman and Sibel completed the line-up.

In the finale, Sanna Nielsen received the most votes from the televoting, but she got the third highest votes from the jury.

The finale was won by Charlotte Perrelli, who will represent Sweden at the contest. She came in 2nd place by the televoting, but she won with the combined votes of the jury.

[edit] Choir

As usual, Melodifestivalen used an in-house choir for backing vocals on some songs. Arranging the harmonies was one-time Melodifestivalen entrant Therese Lof, and she performed in several of the groups this year, alongside fellow choir members Michael Blomqvist, Anna Andersson, Caroline Jonsson, Martin Kagemark, Victoria Nilsson and Anna Nilsson.[citation needed]
