Melissa Louise Belote (born October 16, 1956 in Washington, D.C.) is a former backstroke swimmer from the United States, who won three golden medals as a fifteen-year old at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. One of those golden medals came in the 100m Backstroke, where Belote defeated her American teammate and record holder Susan Atwood. In the 200m Backstroke Belote set a world record (2:19.19). She retired from the sport in 1979. Four years later she was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
