Meldal is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.
Meldal was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Rennebu was separated from Meldal in 1839.
The municipality is most renowned for its mining activities at Løkken Mine in Løkken Verk, being the birthplace of the Orkla mining company, now Orkla Group.
[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was Meðaldalr. The first element is meðal 'middle', the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. The district is lying in the middle of the greater valley of Orkdalen.
