Meland is a municipality in the county of Hordaland, Norway.
Meland was separated from Alversund October 15, 1923. The northern part of Holsnøyni was transferred from Herdla to Meland January 1, 1964.
The administrative centre is at Frekhaug, in the south-eastern part of the island Holsnøy, which makes up the larger part of the municipality. In addition there are a number of smaller islands, among which are Flatøy and Ypsøy. When the region of Nordhordland is approached from Bergen, Meland is entered via the 1614 m long Nordhordland Bridge, built in 1994.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Meland (Norse Meðalland), since the first church was built there. The first element is meðal 'middle', the last element is land n 'land, farm'. The meaning is 'the farm lying between (in the middle of) other farms'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1987. It shows an auger (the production of augers have been important for the municipality). See also the coat-of-arms of Skånland.
