[edit] History

Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) started its first admission of students in September 1997. Its founding chairman was Datuk K. Pathmanaban, who is former Deputy Health Minister of Malaysia and was instrumental in the setting up of the college.

The creation of the medical college was an outcome between an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and India. Malaysia has a long history of having many of its doctors being trained in India. Manipal University has trained more than 2000 Malaysian doctors in its 54 year history making it the single largest private sector contribution to professional medical manpower.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between JVMC Corporation Sdn Bhd and Manipal University for the creation of the college. JVMC Corporation will provide the facilities, infrastructure and management needed for the running of the college while Manipal University will provide administrative, syllabus and teaching support for the programme in both Manipal and Melaka. The MoU was signed in the presence of His Excellency Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Honorable Shri P. V. Narasimha Rao, the then Prime Minister of India.
