Meiafarakin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meiafarakin is a city in modern Iraq. It is located in the Kurdish Mountains.[1]

Prior to about AD 400 it was known as Maipherqat. However in that year its bishop, Marutha of Martyropolis, brought a large number of relics back from Persia. These were the relics of the Persian martyrs from the persecution of Christians in that empire that had barely ended at this point. For this reason it was renamed Martyropolis.
