[edit] Help me!

Hello! I'm a Persian Wikipedian and I wanna build a robot, but I like to build a one in English Wikipedia. So Can you help to make a bot step by step??? Thanks a lot! --MehranVB 17:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

What is the language code of persian wikipedia? I can modify my bot with a few commands to monitor persian wikipedia. --Cat out 22:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
The code of persian wikipedia is fa. But my mind is having a robot for myself. (In other words I wanna build a new robot, but I don't know how??? I downloaded the Python but what's the next step???)

Thanks a lot!--MehranVB 08:11, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I know little about phython, but per your request I have modified my bot to moitor Persian wikipedia for vandalism.
You can use the bot on #wikipedia-fa-vandalism on irc.freenode.net
If you need any other help, I'll be more than willing to assist.
--Cat out 22:32, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
My recomendation (not sure if it is the best but it is what I did) is to take a look at Pywikipedia framework, depending on what you want your bot to do, take one of the prebuilt bots, like replace which I used and change it bit by bit to do what you want it to do. When looking in the code you can find out how it works and find the place that does the actual regexp replace, that is the place you should change to do you code. Have a look and come back with more questions if you need. Stefan 23:50, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
There is no simple step by step instruction, please give some info on what you want your bot to do. Have you downloaded Pywikipedia framework, can you run it? do a replace on your user page. Stefan 00:11, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Step by step.
  • Down load pywikipedia framework [1]
  • learn how to run e.g. replace.py, continue to follow the instruction at [2]
  • Then read the source code of replay.py, try to understand it, find the place where the replay is done, implement your own fixed replace
  • if you do not know python, try to learn it, there are lots of tutorials on the internet, search
  • Implement your own bot (can maybe give better example if you state what you intend your bot to do)
Stefan 11:31, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Not sure why you can not download, I get to a page http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/pywikipediabot/snapshot-20060312.zip?use_mirror=ovh where I can choose download link, when I click I get the save dialogue. If you do not get that then something else is wrong, I do not know what. Maybe the mirror is blocked, try another, maybe it is down, try another, maybe you have wrong settings in IE, try firefox, sorry I do not know. And again, what do you want your bot to do? remeber to ask permission before you run it. Stefan 14:22, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
No need to bother about CVS, since you say you want to do replace, use the replace.py to do that. read on from Preparation part in the page you mention. There are bots that do redirect, interwiki, category and replay so you probably do not need to do any development, just run the respective bots. Good luck. Stefan 00:26, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robot

Hi. If you would like to run a bot, you must first post your request to WP:BRFA, members of the bot approvals group will then review your request, and let you know if the bot will not harm Wikipedia, and will allow a trial run. Please post a request before running the bot. Thanks. --lightdarkness (talk) 13:27, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] When are we Going to See Proof that Azaris are Genetically Turkic

Please keep an eye on Azari and the talk:Azari. I have started the following in the discussion.

It has been ages since these citations have not been verified. Verification is needed. If not delete the material. the amount of time granted has been generious. The Azaris Iranian background has been verified through various scientific and academic sources, but the Turkic claim has not. The only think that has been verified is the Turkic langauge. 72.57.230.179

[edit] Two Articles in need of your attention

There are two entries at Wikipedia, which have falsely created -- they are Turco-Persian and Turko-Persian Tradition. Both entries are factitious. I have requested the entries to be deleted. My reasons are:

The term Turko-Persian Tradition (or Turco-Persian) does not exists academically and it is a factitious entry! Check the Encyclopaedia Iranica to confirm -- The correct name for that culture is the Persianate culture not the "Turko-Persian". Turkophones (mostly of mixed race and Persianized in culture) only spoke in Turkic dialects and were in the military. That is not enough participation in creating and forming the culture to deserve the name "Turko-Persian Tradition" – This is misinformation. All the elements in that area, which have to do with tradition and culture, were drawn from the Iranian culture (Persian, Kurdish, Azari, Baluchi, Tajik, Luri, Gilaki, Talishi, Mazandarani, etc.), and the Islamic faith, not much Turkic elements (like shamanism, yurts etc.) were incorporated in. That is what makes the name "Turko-Persian" an imaginary one and therefore the entry should be deleted.

Any contributions would greatly appreciated. Bā Sepās Surena 02:09, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sean Paul

The term "world music" is in itself parochial and vague, but in combination ("world/reggae") I've no idea what it means; if it has some specific meaning of which I'm unaware (aside from "music that comes from somewhere other than where I live"), then fine. As to capitalisation, why capitalise a common noun after a comma? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:09, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi thanks for changing the info box on Sean Paul - please add some comments to the debate about this on the article's talk page - see "Genres" I've been fighting a losing battle on this one. Well done. Escaper7 12:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Dear friend, before I vindicated using of "World" genre (in talk page). You can talk this matter with MP3.Com users! Anyhow it was my final edit, you are an admin and you can judge this matter truly. And about Capitalisation matters, please see Michael Jackson infobox. Thanks a lot!--MehranVB talk | cont 15:23, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
  1. MP3.com is irrelevant to what we do here.
  2. That another box uses incorrect capitalisation is no reason to do so here. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
  1. We must imitate a reliable reference like IMDb, AllMusic Guide, etc. What's your opinion about MP3.Com? We can add "world" genre in infobox with a <ref> tag, what's the problem? However it's not very important for me & I just want to know more about Wiki rules!
  2. I'm not American, so it's possible for me to make mistakes (sometimes). Anyway capitalisation is not very serious for me, because it may observe in many big websites like Yahoo or same MP3.Com! But I'll try to heed the grammar...--MehranVB talk | cont 09:15, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

No, we we don't have to imitate any site — and if other sites get things wrong, we shouldn't imitate them. The trouble with "world music" is, first, that it's almost meaningless; it's used to include North Indian classical music, Japanese pop, Peruvian flute music, Javanese gamelan, South African jive, European traditional musics, etc., etc. Secondly, it's parochial (and perhaps patronising); the Zutons, REM, Joni Mitchell, Gorillaz, Miles Davis, Beethoven, John Lee Hooker — these aren't world music, because they're European and American... so "world music" lumps together all of that funny foreign stuff, that we can't be bothered to distinguish between.

Incidentally, I'm not American either — and even(!) Americans can make mistakes... The point about issues like capitalisation, though, is that every publication, including serious Web sites, have its own Manual of Style (formally or informally), which differ one from another in many respects. For example, some publications use capital letters for every word in a title, others use none; we use capital letters except for prepositions, articles, etc. If another Web site uses a capital in a certain place, you can't assume that it should be used here (see the WP:MOS). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:13, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your attention, and informing me...
I (and maybe we) don't familiar with all of the music expressions, because there are many things like that in MP3.Com, for example it uses "/" between two genres and (presumably) change the genre significance completely. "World/Reggae" was used in many singers page (include of Shaggy), another example is "Electronic/Dance". We know what "Rock/Pop" is but we don't know what "World/Reggae" is, I hope you understand what my purpose is.
Anyway it's not an important subject and I accept your rationalization now.
Again thanks for informing --MehranVB talk | cont 08:27, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cinema project

Dear Mehran! I understood that you are a member of Persian cinema project. Apparently only two members of this project except me are active users. I have recently made pages for many film directors of Iran, Kurdistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan who got an international prizes. We need to have a page for every single award winning actor and director. I have also wrote Iranian cinema page from scratch and organized prize categories etc. Currently I am working on Abbas Kiarostami and I would like to bring it to a good article status. I would like to have input from other users like you about my edits. Without your comments I may overlook shortcommings of the articles. For instance I would like to nomminate Abbas Kiarostami's page and later on page of Iranian cinema as "good article". But I would like to check them with mambers of Persian cinema project. It would be very kind of you if you could help me and comment on my style of writings. Thanks a lot and take care.Sangak 17:51, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Dear friend,
Firstly I should thank you about your superb contributions. Unfortunately I'm in Wikibreak and there is no time to check your article. Anyway I'll try to check it, in a glancing look it appears good, but you didn't observe some norms such as "Notes and references" and other little trivia. But average is good and certainly it will be one of a "good articles". --MehranVB talk | cont 08:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kiarostami: FAC

Hi

I would like to invite all those who reviewed "Abbas Kiarostami" during last two months to comment on the article at this "final" stage. The article is now featured article candidate. In case you have any comment, please let me know on the Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Abbas Kiarostami page. Thanks.Sangak 16:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

You support? I thought you said the article was looking worse and wasn't up to B-class standard? I did say that I would help to sort it out and am glad that people are now seeing that it is actually good!!. Yes unfortunately there doesn't seem much info on his early life what do you suggest we do about that?. THankyou anyway for you support Ernst Stavro Blofeld 13:47, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I have added the final details to his early life and a relevant image. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:59, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Thank you about completing that part of article, I have just given a suggestion, I like that we have a complete article without any defects. And there are no reasons to change my opinion from "Support"!
Anyway the article is very very well with your final edition. Thanks a lot about your attention. --MehranVB talk | mail 05:49, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

THanks a lot for supporting anyway. I'm glad hard work payed off. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 22:25, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
