Mehmet Ali Şahin

Mehmet Ali Şahin (b Karabük 1950) is Minister of Justice in the 60th Turkish Government, and member of Parliament for Istanbul of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). He was formerly Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State responsible for sports.

He is a lawyer, a graduate of Istanbul University faculty of law, and before entering the parliament, he had been involved in regional politics in Istanbul, with Tayyip Erdoğan's Welfare Party (RP), which later evolved into the AKP.

During his term as sports minister he had to deal with a situations including:

  • allegations of corruption in the Turkish Super League,
  • drugtaking by weightlifters and athletes,
  • a scandal involving him accepting a racehorse as a gift from the Turkish Racehorse Owners and Breeders Association [1]

He is married with four children.
