From the Greek megas, meaning great + "martyr". Megalomartyr is a title given to certain martyred saints in the Orthodox Church. These saints are always from the first centuries of the Church, before the Edict of Milan. They are generally extremely popular saints. This term is never applied to saints who could be better described as hieromartyrs (martyred clergy) or protomartyrs (the first martyr in a given region).
Some saints frequently called megalomartyrs are:
- Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki
- Saint Artermius
- Saint George
- Saint Theodore Tiron
