Mega Man Xtreme (Rockman X: Cyber Mission in Japan) is a spinoff title in the Mega Man X series of video games from Capcom. It was released for the Game Boy Color and was followed by one direct sequel, Mega Man Xtreme 2. Chronologically, it takes place sometime between Mega Man X3 and Mega Man X4.
A hacker from a band of Mavericks called the Shadow Hunters, Techno, hacks into the world's Mother Computer, destabilizing all of the networks and allowing Mavericks to run wild everywhere. Naturally, X volunteers to dive into cyberspace and put a stop to the madness. This story is split into three arcs: normal, hard and extreme. The mode determines the bosses that confront X on his way.
[edit] Characters
- Mega Man X
- Zero
- Dr. Cain
- Sigma
- Zain - A Shadow Hunter with a large sword. He doesn't speak much, and seems only interested in combat.
- Geemel - A Shadow Hunter with a large shuriken. Geemel was a thrill-seeker who, along with his partner Zain and the help of Techno, hacked the Maverick Hunter's main computer, which caused chaos and anarchy for the rest of the world.
- Middy - Middy is a green-armored child prodigy along with his twin Techno, a genius computer scientist and programmer. Although Middy assisted X to the best of his abilities, he held back the knowledge that his brother, Techno, was involved.
- Techno - A purple-armored computer expert who hacks into the mother computer for the Shadow Hunters. He was brainwashed by Sigma into helping them hack the main computer at the Maverick Hunter HQ and compromise both their security and records.

[edit] Upgrades
Scattered throughout the stages are powerups used by X to enhance his attributes and obtain a wider range of skills:
- Body Upgrades - Usually found in well-hidden areas, a projection of Dr. Light will give X encouragement and allow him to acquire an upgrade through use of a capsule:
- Boots - found in Chill Penguin's stage, these boots cause X to automatically dash-jump while climbing walls. They also allow X to break certain blocks by kicking off of them while wall-climbing. This upgrade is deliberately found in plain sight and cannot be avoided in Easy Mode or Extreme Mode.
- Armor - found in Flame Stag's stage, the armor upgrade reduces the damage X takes by half.
- Helmet - found in Storm Eagle's stage, the upgraded helmet allows X to destroy certains types of blocks by jumping into them head-first.
- X-Buster - found in Spark Mandrill's stage, the enhanced X-Buster allows X to charge up his normal X-Buster to a fourth level (versus the previous three). It also allows him to charge boss weapons to a second level, which invokes an alternate-fire mode.
- Hadouken And Shoryuken/Shotokan - found in the second Shadow Hunter stage only after defeating all eight bosses and obtaining all upgraded parts. The Hadouken fires an immensely powerful blast that will hurt just about any enemy badly, and the Shoryuken is a strong uppercut that works the same way. Both are cameo attacks from Capcom's wildly successful Street Fighter series. Hadouken was also featured as a secret instant-kill weapon in Mega Man X1, and Shoryuken was featured as a similar, though harder to use, weapon in Mega Man X2. However, in the first two games, the weapons required the player to enter the correct Street Fighter key combination to use. In Xtreme, the weapons could be accessed via holding up or down when charged to the purple level. As most of the levels in Mega Man Xtreme are almost exact duplicates of levels in X1 and X2, Shotokan is in the same place as Shoryuken was in X2.
- Zero Scrambles- There are four capsules that allow X to summon Zero to perform special attacks.
- Dash- found in Armored Armadillo's stage. When used, Zero appears and crashes into the enemy.
- Rising- found in Wheel Gator's stage. When used, Zero rips upwards with his sword.
- Earth Gaizer- found in Morph Moth's stage. When used, Zero sends out a powerful earthquake.
- Zero Final- found in Magna Centipede's stage. When used, Zero performs his ultimate attack.
- Health Supplements:
- Heart Tanks - increases X's life bar by two units, allowing him to survive more damage; one is found in each stage.
- Sub-Tanks - There are four of these, two in each Mode. They recharge X's HP when he uses them.
