Mega Man Powered Up (ロックマンロックマン Rokkuman Rokkuman?) is a 2006 PlayStation Portable remake of the original Mega Man game released in 1987. It features a new super deformed art style in addition to two new Robot Masters, Time Man and Oil Man. Also, like in Mega Man 7, Mega Man 8, Mega Man & Bass, and the Mega Man X series, there is also a new introductory level that comes before the main level selection screen, complete with a new boss at the end. The game offers two ways to play each level. "New Style" takes advantage of the wide PSP screen and features altered level design with brand-new remixed music. There are actually 468 New Style stages in this mode, 13 for each difficulty (Easy, Normal, and Hard), and 39 for each character (see list of playable characters below). "Old Style" recreates the original aspect ratio and level design of the original Mega Man for NES, and features the original NES game music, but still retains the 3D graphics and super-deformed art style. The game also contains a challenge mode, a level editor, and an online infrastructure mode to distribute fan-made levels online.

[edit] Story

In the year 20XX, master robot designer Dr. Thomas Light works on a project to create human-like robots with advanced artificial intelligence. He creates a pair of robots for domestic use - codenamed "Rock" ("Mega" in the English releases of this game due to a localization error) and "Roll".

With the success of the project, he then builds eight (originally six) more of the Robot Masters to be used for industrial purposes: Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, Elec Man, Time Man, and Oil Man. The project is a great success, and for his work on it, Dr. Light is awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. However, Dr. Light's old colleague and rival, Dr. Albert W. Wily, is not acknowledged for any of his past work - and he grows bitter.

Around this time, Dr. Wily had discovered a prototype robot Dr. Light made before Mega and Roll. This robot, named Proto Man (Blues in the original version), is in danger of having his energy generator going critical. Wily gave him a nuclear energy supply to extend his life, and learned much about creating robots from studying his design. He also likely learned the means to reprogram Dr. Light's robots from this.

Wily announced his plans for world domination, and soon after confronted Rock/Mega and Roll. He found the two-helper robots to be unworthy, and doesn't even attempt to kidnap them. Immediately afterwards, he broke into Dr. Light's lab and took all of the other robots, reprogramming them to follow blindly under his guidance. When Light finds out that Wily had escaped with the Robot Masters, it was too late. Wily has already sent his new robotic army out to conquer the city.

Rock/Mega, having a strong sense of justice, volunteered to be converted into a fighting robot to stop Dr. Wily and his minions and restore peace to the world. From then on, instead of being simply "Mega", he was transformed into the ultimate fighting robot Mega Man (hence the title).

[edit] Changes from the original storyline

Many storyline elements contradict with the original NES version. The English version of the story portrayed Dr. Wily as originally being Dr. Light's partner. Also an act of retconning is Rock/Mega's first encounter with Dr. Wily's scheme. In the American manual, Dr. Wily actually attempted to reprogram Mega, but failed when Rock/Mega resisted it (though it's unknown if it was Rock/Mega's internal programming or putting up a physical resistance that did the trick), and Roll was unaccounted for. This aspect of the plot wasn't completely lost, as at first it looked as though Wily actually succeeded in reprogramming Mega in the boss stories, but upon confronting him, he turned out to be a completely different character.

In order to capture and reprogram a boss, Mega Man needs to defeat the boss with only the Mega Buster. Attempting to use another weapon will destroy the robot. In the original NES version, capturing the bosses is not possible, any weapon including the Mega Buster destroys the bosses. The rescued bosses' storylines portray the Robot Masters as not being reprogrammed, but rather being "rejected" by Dr. Wily.

In the ending of the original game, it is said that the battle wouldn't end until all opposing forces are brought to justice, while the remake instead states that Dr. Wily seemingly changed his ways in New Style. Lastly, Mega Man first being called "Mega" is a localization error which compromises the "rock and roll" reference. It was canonically stated in the U.S. release of Mega Man 4 that his original name was "Rock" (which is also mentioned in Mega Man for Game Gear).

[edit] Gameplay

The gameplay is essentially that of the original Mega Man game and its successors. However, new unlockables and the ability to play as the Robot Master characters the player fights against attempt to give the game a long-term replay value, as well as fan service. The player can also use the PSP's ability to download data, such as custom levels from other players and costumes for Roll (who must also be downloaded into the game to become playable).

[edit] Playable Characters

  • Mega Man (Rockman): The main protagonist of the series. His Weapon Change System allows him to use a Robot Master's weapon after defeating it, albeit with limited ammo. He is the only playable character in Old Style, and the only initially playable character in New Style.

  • Mega Man S (Rockman S): Really just an upgrade for Mega Man, but listed as a separate character in the character select menu. Has all the abilities of normal Mega Man, plus the slide ability originally introduced in Mega Man 3. The slide ability allows Mega Man to more easily dodge enemy attacks and fit through low passages.
  • Mega Man C (Rockman C): Really just another upgrade for Mega Man, but listed as a separate character in the character select menu. Has all the abilities of Mega Man S, plus the ability to charge his buster (originally introduced in Mega Man 4). Since he can use all the special weapons, has a powerful attack with unlimited ammo, and can slide, Mega Man C is the most versatile character (though listed as three separate characters on the character select screen, the different versions of Mega Man are all counted as the same in level completion records).
  • Cut Man: Attacks with the Rolling Cutter, able to throw two at a time (Unlimited ammo). Furthermore, he is the only character who can rebound-jump off of walls to reach higher places. Cut Man appears to be fearful of combat, but has a strong sense of justice that urges him to fight on. He is also easily fooled by Wily, including mistaking a Wily Bot for Mega Man. He seems to be afraid of Roll sometimes.
  • Guts Man: Attacks with "Super Arm", which can lift the Guts blocks that are on the field. If there are no blocks to lift nearby, the attack button will cause Guts Man to summon a block directly in front of him, which he can then lift and throw. When summoned, the block sits wherever placed, and can be used as a platform. Up to 5 blocks can be placed on-screen at any time. Being a strong, heavy guy, Guts Man can also bust special "cracked" blocks by landing on them, or smashing them with his head. Guts Man is supposedly a "foreman", and insists that this title also applies to his relationship with his fellow robot masters, referring to himself repeatedly as their boss.
  • Ice Man: Attacks with the Ice Slasher, able to fire up to three at a time, and can freeze enemies into blocks and use them as platforms. Furthermore, Ice Man does not slip on ice. Ice Man appears to be another "crazy" robot like Fire Man, with a split personality. One a cowardly cadet, and the other his gung-ho commanding officer. He is cute to a fault, which is shown in a dialouge scene with Roll. He is somewhat wary of her, as well.
  • Bomb Man: Attacks with the Hyper Bomb, and can throw them at different angles depending on the direction held when the attack button is pressed. (If you hold forward, he will throw them farther at a lower arc, and if you hold up, he will throw them higher at a short distance. If you hold down, he will simply drop the bomb at his feet.) Bomb Man appears laid-back and fun-loving, but loves playing with explosives and takes his work very seriously. Bomb Man is also a notorious smooth talker.
  • Fire Man: Attacks with the Fire Storm. Unlike Mega Man, Fire Man's shot is the true, wider version, rather than the puny fireball. When Fire Man comes in contact with water, the flame on his head goes out, and he cannot fire shots, though he still has use of the fire-shield. The flame on his head can be re-ignited by coming in contact with fire. Fire Man is also immune to any fire-related obstacles, and can also melt "snow blocks", by standing on top of, or next to them for a second while his fire is lit. Notably, Fire Man speaks with a Texas(Western) accent, and appears to be a confusing character. On the one hand, he's obsessed with Fire and burning things, while on the other, he is also obsessed with Justice and fighting evil. More than anything, he wants to become a great hero, and even under Wily's control, he emphasizes the importance of "Burning Justice".
  • Elec Man: Attacks with the Thunder Beam, but can only fire one shot at a time. Unlike Mega Man, he can manipulate "Elec" blocks with his attacks, forcing them to move in the direction indicated by the metal plate sticking out of it in one of any four directions. As one could guess, he is also immune to electrical "zapper" blocks which shoot out bolts of lightning. ElecMan seems to bear the stereotypical personality of a hollywood actor, self-absorbed and an avid lover of drama and poetry.
  • Time Man: One of the only two Robot Masters whose main attack is not his master weapon. Time Man initially attacks by firing two clock-hand shaped projectiles. One a minute hand that is angled slightly upward and travels quickly, the other an hour hand which is angled slightly downward and travels slowly. Time Man is the only other character that can charge his attack, and when this is accomplished he unleashes his real ability, the Time Slow. Time Man is the only character who can destroy time-blocks. Time Man is obsessed with time, and doesn't appear to give much of a care toward anything or anyone else. He is only truly content when things are going according to his "schedule", which is precise down to the hundredth-of-a-second.
  • Oil Man: The second Robot Master whose initial attack is not his master weapon. Oil Man spits out a glop of oil, which does pathetic damage, even in comparison to Mega Man's normal, uncharged shots. The glop of oil will remain wherever it lands for a few seconds, and when stepped on, Oil Man can use his Oil Slider attack. Unlike Mega Man, Oil Man's control with the slider is much more precise. He can jump higher with it, and move faster. Aside from this, Oil Man also does not trip on Oil. Oil Man tries to emphasize the importance of Oil, but is otherwise laid back, relaxed, and fun-loving like Bomb Man.
  • Mega (Rock): Dr. Light's helper robot with no battle upgrades. His only attack is the Mega Kick, which does little damage and has a short reach, and since he has no armor, he takes more damage than other characters. Mega is the hardest character to play as, and is intended for gamers who want a challenge.
  • Roll: Her attack is the Roll Swing, which causes her to swing an object (a broom by default, but varies with her outfit -- see above) for a close-range attack. The Roll Swing has greater power and reach than the Mega Kick, and, with good timing, a second hit can be chained after the first. Roll has 13 different outfits that only offer cosmetic changes. This character is only available as a download.
  • Proto Man (Blues): Thanks to the nuclear reactor he received from Dr. Wily, Proto Man can run faster and jump higher than any other character. His attack, the Proto Strike, has the power and properties of Mega Man C's fully charged shot (except for the ability to shoot through walls) but requires no charge time. However, due to the instability of said reactor, Proto Man takes twice as much damage as most characters. While standing still, he pulls out his shield, which can block projectile attacks. If he successfully blocks a projectile with his shield, he will drop it, but can easily pick it up again.

[edit] Boss Characters

Due to the two new Robot Masters, the weaknesses of the original six have been altered.

# Robot Master Weapon Weakness
3 Cut Man Rolling Cutter Super Arm
4 Guts Man Super Arm Time Slow
5 Ice Man Ice Slasher Hyper Bomb
6 Bomb Man Hyper Bomb Rolling Cutter
7 Fire Man Fire Storm Ice Slasher
8 Elec Man Thunder Beam Oil Slider
? Time Man Time Slow Thunder Beam
? Oil Man Oil Slider Fire Storm
1 Mega Man? P. Shoot None

Mega Man? is a character fought by the unlocked bosses. He tries to fool everyone, but in reality, Mega was not kidnapped. He manages to fool Cut Man. He looks different from Mega Man, sporting a scarf and scary eyes. Also, the wily background appears in his intro, and his solar receiver is Triangular. His Plasma Shots are green.

[edit] Challenge Mode

Challenge Mode has various challenges to complete. They vary from collecting items to timed challenges. Mega Man's challenges are the first ones available, with the ones for the Robot Masters available after unlocking them as playable characters. After beating New Style Mode in any difficulty, boss survival challenges are accessed. The first four boss survivals involve the Robot Masters, in Old Style, Easy, Normal, and Hard modes. The next four survivals involve the bosses in Dr. Wily's fortress, in the same modes as the Robot Master survivals. The last two survivals feature every boss in the game (except, suspiciously, the Proto Eye from the opening stage) in only the Normal and Hard modes. Any playable character can be played as in the New Style boss survivals. Once all 100 challenges have been completed, the player will be able to use Protoman in the game. However if you have already downloaded Protoman from the "Final Data" download, you will get nothing for beating all 100 challenges.
