Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Nominations/Procedure

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Application to join the Mediation Committee usually take the form of self-nominations, however current and former Members of the Committee may nominate candidates if they wish.

Currently unassigned mediation requests can be found at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Open Tasks. Applicants are encouraged to select an unassigned mediation and volunteer to mediate it by contacting the Chair of the Committee (WJBscribe), either on his talk page or via email. This will allow the Committee to review the candidate's performance, and provides the candidate an opportunity to experience mediation firsthand. Please note that in some situations, such an offer may be discussed by the entire Committee on the private mailing list, at the discretion of the Chair. It may also be beneficial to withhold making a nomination until such an RfM has progressed sufficiently.

Comments by non-Committee members are welcome and appreciated, as a mediator will be working with the community in resolving disputes if appointed. Comments should relate to the candidate's ability to serve as a mediator; comments that raise issues unrelated to the candidate's suitability for the Committee may be disregarded and removed at the discretion of the Committee. Brief and concise comments are generally more helpful than extended monologues or votes, and unhelpful comments may also be removed.

Candidates should be aware that the Committee enforces a "two oppose rule": any candidate that is opposed by two or more mediators will not be appointed to the Committee. Please also note that nominations are sometimes discussed on the private mailing list.

Candidates who are unsure of their qualifications are encouraged to consult a Committee member for advice before submitting a nomination. Candidates declined due to inexperience or being of a controversial nature are encouraged to reapply at a future date, not being within three months of a previously failed nomination. Parties interested in joining the Mediation Committee should begin by reading through the Wikipedia:Mediation pages and familiarizing themselves with Mediation Committee procedure.
