[edit] Discussion
Hello, I just wanted to start off and put my two cents in now that a mediator has taken on our dispute. We posted a compromise edit for the time being, but we were having a hard time agreeing on what spellings were "correct", what sources could be used to prove the spelling, and I threw it up for mediation because I didn't want to get myself caught up in an edit war (I don't have the stress-tolerance level for that, and I'm a teacher!). The issue has definitely died down some since the original edits, but this was an old issue that got resurrected, which is why I wanted someone else to take a look at it from outside. Thanks. - As requested, the parties that take each side:
-
- Killervogel5, EaglesFanInTampa: We consider the fan culture convention of changing F to Ph to be important and as such believe it should remain in the article. The spelling of Fightin' Phils vs. Phightin' Phils is the catalyst behind the debate. Though I personally use the former spelling, I still believe that the convention should be noted and acknowledged.
- Thefestooner: I will not presume to speak for him; however, please find a quote of his from the talk page below.
[W]hile I will admit that many sportswriters and print reporters in general (mostly national) like to use the PH spelling for words beginning with F because it makes for a snazzier headline, MOST Philadelphians shudder at that conceit. Basically it is tired and trite. The Phillies traditionally, even though they have an alliterative double PH name, have shied away from usung (sic) the PH where not appropriate, the one notable exception being the Phillie Phanatic.
Hi there. I'm not sure why it should have even come to this arena, mainly because I thought this section (up to the June 20, 2007, post) covered and resolved this issue. However, we're here, so I guess I should point out why this was an issue in the first place.
As a Delaware Valley native, I have grown up as a "phan" of the Philly teams my entire life. I lived and died with them...died more so than lived. Anyway, some newscasts, most articles, and many things sports-related replaced any "f" in the main headline with "ph" (especially during championship quests, see here, 4th article down as an example). It is most prevalent when regarding the Phillies (mainly because of the spelling of the word, I assume), but it has happened with the other sports as well. On the main page, I cited a few examples of officially-sanctioned examples of "ph" receiving preferential treatment over "f", however, they were removed by Thefestooner when reverting my edits; they can be seen in my article change, which was a compromise showing both possible ways, here, dated 10:14, April 14, 2008.
While I completely understand that "Fightin'" is used as much as "Phightin'" in the culture of the Phillies, they both are used, and both deserve equal distinction. I'm perfectly happy displaying both, but I find it disheartening to see some reliable links to infomation to back up my work removed when it was reverted. (And on a personal note, I am a transplanted Philadelphian, but I do not "shudder at that conceit," nor do I find it "tired and trite." I personally find it a badge of honor and one of the nuances that makes Philly "phans" unique to the world of sports.)
Hopefully, this can be resolved so all accurate information can be displayed on the article once again. EaglesFanInTampa 15:06, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- If you guys think that this is resolved, please say so here so we can close it. And none of you have a problem with me being a Mets fan, do you? Mm40|Talk|Sign|Review 23:02, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

- No problems with Mets fans... as long as they stay on Wikipedia. Haha. I would say it's probably resolved by compromise, but I'd like to wait until TheFestooner has a chance to respond, just so I know he's gotten a chance to get his words in. He was pretty steamed when this first went down. KV5 (talk) 23:47, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
