Hmm. I think you info-bombed some parts of the page there, Ve3. Also you cut out some appropriate reference material.

I just reverted. They conflated the category of Squad Automatic Weapon with Medium Machinegun. Definite mistake. SAWs are in increasingly common usage, but that doesn't change the definition of MMG in any way, despite 71.131.241.44's confusion... Georgewilliamherbert 07:14, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Same as a General Purpose Machine Gun?

Isn't MMG pretty much synonymous with GPMG these days? If so, the pages should be merged. If not, notes should be added about how they're different.

They're definitely not the same as a SAW - that's a synonym for LMG!

My hunch is that GPMG is a British/Commonwealth term, and MMG is a USAian term, although i could be wrong.

The term is largely historical at this point - GPMG is the current one (air cooled, multipurpose design - though a specific unit may be fixed mount, tripod, bipod, etc). MMG and LMG were the old terms, with water cooling as one differentiator between them. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 21:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

The description is of a rifle caliber bullet of around 7.62 mm, the M16 is neither a Medium machine gun, nor of that calibre. If it was the intention to mention smaller calibres such as the 5.56 then that is all that is needed; a wikilink to the M16 serves no purpose but to confuse.GraemeLeggett (talk) 12:08, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
