[edit] History

The Medical Council of India was set up in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933. But with the phenomenal growth of medical education in India after independence, it was felt that the provision of Indian Medical Council Act were not adequate to meet the new challenges. Thus the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933 was repealed and a new act, Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 was enacted. This later act was further amended in 1964, 1993 and last in 2001.

[edit] Objectives

The objectives of the Indian Medical Council as per the Act are as follows.

  • Maintenance of uniform standards of medical education, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
  • Recommendation for recognition/de-recognition of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or foreign countries.
  • Permanent registration/provisional registration of doctors with recognised medical qualifications,
  • Reciprocity with foreign countries in the matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications, registration of additional qualifications and issue of Good Standing Certificates for doctors going abroad to Commonwealth countries.

Corruption of standards of medical council has occurred in recent years due to doctors heading the medical council of India like Dr Ketan Desai, Dr Keshavan Kutty Nair et al.
