The constitution provides for freedom of speech and the press; however, the government prohibits the exercise of these rights in practice.

Despite the lack of a free press, several Burmese news services have gotten out. The BurmaNet News is an online news service covering Burma (Myanmar) established in 1994. The service is distributed for free via a listserv and an online website. It compiles the most recent published news and opinion pieces pertaining to Burma five times a week, excluding some holidays. It provides coverage and opinons on Burma from around the world. Mizzima and Irrawaddy also present news services with a particular focus on Burma from within and externally.

A huge variety of magazines, ranging from monthly to biannuals exist in Myanmar, although their market is smaller compared to the "journals". Topics include Burmese traditional medicine, various magazines published by non-Burmese ethnic races (like the Shan and Rakhine), Buddhist related, astronomy related magazines.
