The daily newspaper serving Waterloo Region is The Record, which is based in Kitchener. The Waterloo Chronicle is a weekly newspaper focused mainly on the city of Waterloo. The Cambridge Times serves a similar purpose in Cambridge. Prior to 2004, a separate daily newspaper, the Cambridge Reporter, operated in that city, but was merged with the Times. Others include the New Hamburg-based New Hamburg Independent which focuses on Wilmot Township, and the Elmira Independent, which focuses on Woolwich Township. These papers are published by Metroland Media Group, a division of Toronto-based Torstar, and operated under the management structure of Metroland located in Mississauga, Ontario. Other more rural newspapers in the region include the Elmira-based Woolwich Observer which delivers news of the townships of Wellesley and Woolwich, and the Baden Outlook which has a circulation of approximately 2,050 copies and has been running since 2000. Visitor Guide, circulation 100,000 is a 3 time a year tourist magazine that has been published in Waterloo Region since 1978, and Exchange Magazine for Business, circulation 20,000 is 8 time a year business magazine and Monday to Friday online business daily that has been publishing in the Waterloo Region area since 1983.

The only broadcast TV station based in Waterloo Region is CKCO-TV, which has called itself CTV Southwestern Ontario since 2005. It is located in Kitchener, just south of the border with Waterloo, and is owned by CTVglobemedia. The region is also served by Rogers Television, a community channel based in Kitchener available only to Rogers Cable subscribers. It provides local talk shows and coverage of special events and local hockey games.
