[edit] Website hosting services

Media Temple's primary business is website hosting. They offer the following services:

[edit] (gs) Grid-Service

Grid-Service uses grid hosting technology, which uses a network of servers that work together as a team.[3] Unlike traditional shared hosting, grid hosting can cope well with spikes in traffic as it can assign more servers to help carry the load. Grid hosting services are also far more affordable than larger dedicated servers and Media Temple currently offers the lowest price for grid hosting[3], with Grid-Service priced at $20 per month[4]. Since its launch on October 17, 2006[5], Grid-Service has proven popular with website owners, with 9,000 domains hosted on the service in the first 9 days[6]. Media Temple currently hosts more than 200,000 websites from 40 countries on Grid-Service.[3]

[edit] Criticism

Although Grid-Service offers clear benefits over traditional shared hosting solutions, it has come under criticism for service outages[3][7]. Intermittent service availability has been a frequent problem[8][9][10][11]. In one case, periodical downtime occurred between April 29, 2008 and May 28, 2008, until engineers made substantial changes to the system's storage architecture[12].

[edit] Replacement

Grid-Service will be replaced by (cs) Cluster-Server in 2008[13]. It will feature a re-architected storage system which will be designed to eliminate the main source of service instability that the Grid-Service suffered from.

[edit] (dv) Dedicated-Virtual

Dedicated-Virtual is a virtual private server solution[14]. It is more expensive than the Grid-Service, starting at $50 per month, but provides customers with greater power and customisation options.

[edit] (dpv) Nitro

Introduced on July 27, 2007[15], Nitro is a dedicated physical virtual server solution[16]. Starting at $750 per month, it is by far the most expensive off-the-shelf hosting solution that the company offers. Typical customers are those that run websites with a great deal of traffic, including Diesel, Adobe, Rip Curl, Mashable and Qantas[17].

[edit] (cx) Complex-Hosting

Media Temple also offers custom hosting solutions under the (cx) Complex-Hosting brand[18].
