[edit] History and overview
Media Archive for Central England (MACE) is a public sector regional film archive that collects, preserves and provides access to film, television and other moving image materials which relate to the governmental region of the East Midlands and West Midlands (region). In 1995 it was registered as a company, with a board of directors, with the intention of forming a regional archive. MACE subsequently became a working archive when James Patterson was appointed as its Director in 2000. It is an independent limited company and a registered charity based at the University of Leicester.
MACE is a small organization working with a wide range of partnerships across the Midlands. It is one of eight publicly funded regional film archives that are members of the Film Archive Forum (FAF).
MACE receives funding from Government via the regional screen agencies of the East and West Midlands: EM Media and Screen WM.
MACE sees its primary function as being to connect people to their moving image heritage and works to do this in the context of being the principle service provider in the Midlands. The services they provide fall into two broad areas: repository and access. Repository services are there for those who have moving image material and want help and advice in looking after it. This might, and often does, lead to material being deposited with MACE. Their access services respond to the needs of the different communities of users.
MACE is guided by shared values and practices outlined by the Film Archive Forum. These values and practices focus on five primary/core functions:
- Collection/acquisition
- Research
- Documentation/cataloguing
- Preservation
- Access to collections and information
