Medellin National Science and Technology School (MNSTS) was established in 1996 after a resolution was passed by a Medellin municipal councilor in the person of Hon. Petronilo Villarin that a science school be made in the place, particularly in Poblacion. By then, the local officials as well as the fourth district representative Clavel Asas Martinez collaborated hand in hand to provide funds for the establishment of the edifice.

In its early years of conception, when there was not enough rooms or a building for the students to occupy, lectures were done at the Medellin Central School with the students squatting on the floor. After its furnishing, the new MNSTS building located at the New Medellin Estate Subdivision provided the students a conducive place to study and learn.

[edit] Mathematics

Almost existing for more than one decade now, MNSTS has been setting a record of different academic and non-academic achievements.

In the field of Mathematics, the school has been consistently doing a good job in MTAP Metrobank Math Challenge Competition. This yearly activity is a contest of mathematical skills that ranges from the first year up to the fourth year level. In the school year 2003-2004, Jerry Destacamento, a senior student topped the division level competition to qualify for the regionals. A school has to undergo municipal, area or sectoral, and division levels to get into the regional level. In all but regional levels, MNSTS has continuously proven its name and integrity being a powerhouse of Math wizards in the northern Cebu area.

Math teacher Manolito Batusin is one of the school's and the district's best Math teahcers as he and his students always reap awards during competitions of Math Challenge or Math Olympiad. Accompanying him is Mrs. Cesaria Cañete who excels best in teaching Algebra for the second year students.

Some of the well known Math wizards of MNSTS who had put name in the Cebu division are Antonio Polosan Jr., Jerry Destacamento, Bernadette Tangente, Loreen Nellas, Krisalita Villarosa, Johanna Comendador, Loida Catamco, Carol Marie Tan, Kaye Antonette Ayat, Desiree Solas, Marsyl Czarina Gavas, Niño Roger Tinay and many more.

This year 2007, MNSTS has once again became a champion in the municipal levels with each MNSTS delegate winning his/her respective category. Division levels will be held soon this year.

[edit] Campus Journalism

MNSTS is home to Cebu's first and only one campus journalist who became a champion in the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), an annual writing contest that aims to enhance the skills and talents of students in the same field. John Destacamento was a senior student when he bagged the first place in NSPC 2005 sports writing English category, ousting 48 other delegates from the entire Philippine archipelago. NSPC 2005 was held in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte. Like Math competitions, one has to undergo area, division and regional levels before making it to the nationals.

John is the most iconic character in MNSTS until now in the field of campus journalism. Besides being a sports writer, he was first an English news writer before and had been consistently topping the division levels by grabbing the first place twice in a row during DSSPC 2003 and 2004 held in Sibonga NHS and Compostela NHS respectively. These feats enabled him to qualify and represent his school and the division of Cebu to the regionals which were conducted in Valencia, Bohol in 2003 and Danao City in 2004. Recently, he conducted seminar workshop in campus journalism for the students of his previous school. MNSTS has been doing quite good in this area too since 2001 when the first MNSTS writer, Jouana Mahinay was able to make it to the national levels under the Editorial writing Filipino category.

Alexes Tan and Loreen Nellas also were able to taste regional press conference levels by winning their respective categories in the division levels. Tan ranked first in the Division Secondary Schools Press Conference (DSSPC) in feature writing Filipino category while Nellas won seventh place in Editorial cartoooning - Filipino, to enable both of them to qualify for the Regional Schools Press Conference in 2003 and 2006 respectively.
