Mecha Ortiz

Maria Mercedes Varela Nimo Dominguez Castro de Ortiz (24 September 1900 - 20 October 1987 Buenos Aires) was a classic Argentine actress who appeared in film between 1937 and 1981. She is widely considered to be the Argentine equivalent of Greta Garbo.

Beginning in 1937 in film Ortiz made some 55 film appearances in Argentina playing major roles in films such as the 1954 film El Abuelo (1954 film) alongside actors such as Enrique Muino. Her last appearance on film was in 1981 at the age of 81.

She died in 1987.

She was married to Julián Ortiz, an Argentine farmer with whom she had a son, Julián who became a translator and playwright. Mecha had a brother called José, who was a theatre director and a sister, Amanda who also was an actress.
