Meah Shearim Yeshiva and Talmud Torah

The Meah Shearim Yeshiva and Talmud Torah is located in a large building in the heart of the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem. It was established in 1885.

The study hall on the second floor boasts a magnificent ceiling with paintings of holy places in Israel, motifs from the Jewish holiday cycle, biblical animals and memorials for the deceased. They were painted by Issac Beck in the 1850's on special scaffoldings built for him. Unfortunately, they have begun to deteriorate with age and efforts are being made to preserve them.

The head of the yeshiva for many years was Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz, one of the leaders of the Mizrahi movement. During the British mandate period the building also served as the movement’s base in Jerusalem.
