Meaford, Staffordshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meaford is a landmark hamlet in the English county of Staffordshire.

It lies at the junction of the A34 and A51 roads, north of the town of Stone. It is on the River Trent, while Meaford Lock is on the Trent and Mersey Canal. Meaford's most famous son is John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent, the naval hero (see below).

Meaford was for the later part of the 20th Century easily identifible from the main A34 road by its coal fired power station, which was operated by the CEGB and later National Power. The Power station was in later life used solely as a reserve site and was closed and the main structures demolished in the mid 1990's. The site and the remaining buildings are now owned by property developer St Modwen.
