McWhirters Marketplace is a shopping centre in Fortitude Valley an inner city suburb of Brisbane. Established at the Valley Corner of Brunswick Street and Wickham Street in 1898 the history of the site is extensive. The site was formally the site of McWhirters Department Store until it was bought out by Myer in 1955. The Myer department store operated until 1988 due to a decline in demand for shopping in the Valley, mostly due to the rise of suburban shopping complexes such as Westfield Chermside. The main inner city shopping precinct subsequently moved to Queen Street in the CBD. The McWhirters centre reopened in 1988 in its current format renamed as McWhirters Marketplace.
