Mchinji, population 11,408 (1998), is a city in the Central Region of Malawi.

Mchinji is currently the railhead nearest the Zambian border. The Zambian President Levi Mwanawasa recently signed a deal with Malawi to extend the railroad to the Zambian border town of Chipata by 2009, providing a new rail access point to Zambia via Mchinji. [1]
